CHARLESL. DUNI-IAM, OF OEhITERYIEYV, OHIO.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,742, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed November 29, 1901. $erial No. 84,020. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centerview, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin pipe-wrenches; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and-arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, f ullyillustrate my device, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view, part sectional, of myimproved pipe-wrench; and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the pipe wrench, which comprises two parts aand b.- The portion a is provided with the solid handle a to a point at, when the sameis forked, as ate, and to a point f at the top when said portion is solid at the hooked end. The upper end of this portion of the wrench is somewhat broadened, and through each portion 9 h is formed an opening in which is placed a belt or pin 2', that also passes through an opening in the other section. This section bis formed of a solid piece, and it comprises a handle 70 and an upper gripping-jaw Z,that corresponds in shape to the opposite fixed jaw m of the portion a. The solid movable jaw 12 is constructed with an ofiset n and a D-shaped opening 0 in the upper part that receives the a bolt or pin by which it is pivoted to the fixed jaw. The peculiar formation of this" opening and the movable section is such that a powerful grip is obtained upon the pipe,as will be further hereinafter explained.
It will be observed that the pivotal connection of the two sections is placed near the top of the device and above the rear portion of the solid or movable jaw, and when pressure upon said section is applied the peculiar shape of the opening 0 provides gradual and powerful outward and upward pressure of the movable jaw upon the pipe, the pivotal pin following the lower curved portion 12, whereby the. jaw has a wedging grip and is prevented from slipping. It will be further seen that byconstructing the fixed section with the slotted upper portion the movable section is passed through said slot, and by the peculiar construction of the solid section-11 6., having the ofiset-the two handles are caused to come together and in line with one another. At the same time I provide my pivotal connection at a point Where a tremendous pressure may be given to the movable jaw, and which is greatly assisted by the peculiar formation of the pivotal opening, and the gripping-surfaces of both of the jaws are smooth, thereby preventing the pipe from being injured. At the same time it is simple in operation, durable, and not expensive to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- In a pipcwrench, the same comprising a fixed and a movable jaw, the two parts pivoted to one another at the upper end of the sections and above the horizontal line of the gripping-jaws 'and in rear thereof substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
CHARLES LJDUNHAM.
