Bc it known that I, 11.11. BOWLUS, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox, and State of Tennessee, hare invent-ed a new and improved Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is n. full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, whi i1 will enable' those skilled in the art to lnake and usevthe same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in'whieh- Figure l is a side View of aporrion of my improved fence.V Y

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fence, 'adapted for use in places liable to be ovcrllowcd by high water, which shall he so constructed that the panels may be thrown down,l so that the drift may pass over the fence without injuring it, and which een be set np again in n. very shortntilne; and it consists in hinging or pivoting the lower end of the central cross-bar or bottom of the panels to n short post, securely set in the ground; in securing the panels,` when ina vertical position, by hooks or catches pivoted to4 the upper ends or parts ot' the short posts; and. in connecting the ends of the adjacent panels to each other by keys or their eqruiilalents, the wlmlebeingconstructeal and arranged as hereinafter incre fully described.

A. are the posts, which should be securely set in the ground, and which, for an ordinary felice, should be about two and a .half feet high. B are the panels, the horizontal bars bl el' which are connected to eachother and secured in their proper relative positions -by cross-bars bgplaced upon each side of the ends of the horizontal bars b, and bythe cross-bars bs placed upon each side of the said .horizontal bar bl, at the centres of. the panels. Thet fence is placediupon the down-stream side ofposts A, and the lower ends of the outer central crossbars b? are pivoted to the posts A a. little above the surface of the'ground, as shown in figs. 1 and 3, in such a. way that the panels may be thrown down,s,o us to lie upon thesurfaee of the ground, and so that, .when down,

they may swing laterally upon-the said pivotingpoints.

C are hooks or catches, pivoted to the upper ends of the posts A, and which, when the panels are erect, pass between the horizontal bars b', and hoolior catch upon the central cross-bars 63 of said panels, asv shown in figs. l, 2, and 3, and hold the panels securely in place. 'llie-endsof the panels are connected to each other by keys D, placed between the edges of the horizontal bars bl and 'between the end cross-bars b2 of two a ljacent panels, as shown in fig. 1. It' desired, the ends of the a ljacentpanelsu1uy be connected by hooks, or in any other convenient and detachable manner.

By this construction, when the water rises, the panels may be disconnected, and allowed to fall down, so that the drift may pass over without injuring the fence. 'lhe fence need not be thrown down until the water has risen half way up the fence; then, by passing alongl *in a. boat, the panels maybe readily thrown down. When the water has subsided,l the fence can be readily and very quickly set up again.
