KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:

That I, ALBEN BRIGIIAM, of Cold Brook, in the county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have mode certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare that the following is n. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which'- I Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved dust-pan, and

Figure 2 represents a. section on line A. B, tig. 1.-

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs vto make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.

The object of my invention is to obviate the necessity of stooping to brush. the dirt from the floor or carpet into a. dust-pan after it has been swept into a bunch, or so as not to occupy but a small space upon the carpet or floor, und also to facilitate the removal of the dust and dirt from the pan in expeditious and easy manner.

In the drawings, A, iig. 1, represents the pan complete. The bottom B is made wide in front, and gradu-v -ally tapers as it extends back. The sides C C rise gradually, and also converge towards each other as they.

extend back untilV they reach the points a aLWhen they drop or incline down slightly until they reach the points b, where they are combined, or until with the inclined back D, which extends back and up from the bottom B, as fully shown in the drawings, and in combination with the Sides C C` form a somewhat oval or oblong-shaped opening, E,-back of the rail or handle support F, through which the dust and dirt can be easily turned into an opening in the stove or into any proper dust-receptacle. From the top ofthe bn-il'or handlesupporting piece F, rises the socket Cr, into. which e handle of any desired length may be inserted. The fro'nt edge of the bottom B is bent down, as shown at c, while a small projection, al, is fastened or attached to the centre of the rear of the bottom. It will beobserved that the combined effect of the projectionol and bent front edges c of the bottom B is to render the bottom of the dust-pan self-adjusting, and that` the front edge of the pan will always itclose to the cfu-pet or floor, since the projection d keeps the rear otthe bottom VB above the floor or carpet, and the front edge c always down close to the carpet or floor.

The operation is as followsi The pan is dropped or placed upon the loor or carpet in any convenient place, and the dirt or dust upon the iloor or carpet swept into it, which can be easily :1nd conveniently done without stooping more than is necessary in ordinary sweeping. The sweeper now takes hold of thc handle, which is to be inserted in the socket G, and lifts the pan and carries it tosome convenient pla-ce and empties the dirt and dust from the rearofthe pan through the opening E, bock of the bail.

The dust and dirt can, be emptied from my improved dust-pan in a. much more convenient and secure manner than from the common dust-pan. Again, the fatigue and labor of stooping down and brushing the dust and dirt into the pan, necessary when the common pam are used, are entirely obviated hy the use of my improved dust-pan.

Having described my improvements, what .l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
