S. C. HARLAN. DUST PAN.
110. 450,670. Patented Apr. 21,1891.
Q NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL C. IIARLAN, OF LAKE CITY, MINNESOTA.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 450,67 0, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed September 13, 1889. Serial No. 323,877. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. I-IARLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Wabash and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures of the draw 1ngs.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre' sents the dust-pan proper, which may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings. The pan A is provided with the bottom I), which is provided with the bend c, which bend is located substantially as shown in the drawings, and is for the purpose hereinafter described.
For the purpose of preventing the front or forward edge of the bottom I) from springing and becoming out of shape, the brace C is provided, which brace is attached in any convenient and well-known manner to the bottom b. The brace extends entirely across the bottom 1), thereby strengthening said bottom and atthe same time serving as a rest for the dust-pan proper.
The handle d is attached to the dust-pan A in the ordinary manner. For the purpose of holding the handle cl at the desired point of adjustment and at the same time keeping the front or forward edge of the bottom Z) down to the carpet or floor the brace e is provided, which brace is attached to the outer end of the handle cl and to the pan A. It will be understood that by providing the brace e the dust-pan proper can be easily held to the carpet or floor by the foot, and at the same time the pan can be moved back and forth on the carpet or fioor by the foot, and thereby prevent the stooping of a person using my dustpan.
In use, when dust is to be collected upon a dust-pan, it frequently happens that a ridge or row of dust is collected directly in front of the pan, and the pan must be moved back a few inches in order to sweep the ridge or row of dust upon the pan. It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to do this without stooping until all of the dust is collected. It will also be understood that as the dust is passed over the bend c it will not be scattered upon the carpet or floor. The brace 6 extends downward below the bottom 1) and is located substantially in line with the bottom of the brace C, thereby holding the front edge of the bottom 1) down to the carpet.
It will be noticed that the front edge of the brace O is attached to the bottom 1) on a line slightly in rear of the front edge of thelatter, so that the said edge will rest close upon the floor and will prevent in a large measure any dirt being swept underneath the pan.
I am aware of the constructions described and illustrated in the patents to Dietz and Dietz, No. 2%,115; P. A. Scha11ck,No.92,754; E. O. Atwood, No. 317,433, and E. Kramni,No. 168,839, and such, therefore, Ido not claim.
Having fully described myinvention,wl1at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A dirt-pan consisting of the bottom I), bent at c, the re-enforeing piece 0, attached to the bottom slightly in rear of its front edge, the handle (1, and the brace 6, adapted to form the rear support for the pan, substantially as described.
SAMUEL HARLAN. Vitnesses:
N. O. PIKE,
J. MANNIN e.
