IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT AND SHOE CLEANERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,072, dated November 19, 1878; application filed April 19, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, G. FREDERICK ZIEG- LER, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and'State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Scrapers and Brushes for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:

Brushers and scrapers have been constructed in such a manner as to act upon the bottom or sole of the shoe, and in some instances there have been side brushes for cleaning the edges of the sole, and other brushes for the top of the shoe and for the toe.

My improvement is made with reference to combining the foot, side, top, and toe brushes ina removable frame, that is held in a bedplate or receptacle, into which the dust and dirt are received, and this receptacle is part of a plate upon which a person stands while brushing the boots or shoes. By this improvement the foot brush or scraper can be laid upon the carpet or in any convenient place, and does not require to be attached, because the weight of the person keeps it in place, and any dust or dirt is received into the pan, and can be emptied out whenever desired.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the foot brush or scraper, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.

The plate to forms a platform, upon which the person using the foot brush or scraper stands. This plate is extended in the form of a pan or receptacle for the dirt. b is the bottom, 0 the sides, and d the ends, of this pan, and there should be a cross-piece, e, beneath the pan, to raise the same slightly from the floor, as shown.

The brushes f for the bottom of the foot are made of bristles or their equivalents, projecting upwardly from the wooden cross-pieces t,

that are united at their ends into the wooden yoke or bow it, that is adapted to set Within and between the flanges or sides 0 d of the dirt-pan.

In the side portions of the how it the bristles or equivalents project to form the brushes k or said brushes may be in separate heads attached to the bow h, and the toe-brush l is similarly attached.

The arch m extends across from side to side of the yoke or how h, and it is provided with tufts upon its under side.

The person using the scraper or brush stands upon the plate a, and brushes the bottom, sides, top, and toe of the boot or shoe to whatever extent is necessary; and I remark that the row of brush-tufts at s aids in cleaning the angle between the heel and the sole.

The frame composed of the cross-pieces t, yoke h, and arch m can be lifted out of the dirt-pan whenever desired to remove from said pan any accumulation.

I claim as my invention- 1. The removable frame composed of the cross-pieces t, yoke h, and arch m, made removable from the metal pan 1) c d, in combination with the brushes f for the sole, It for sides of the shoe, the brushes 1 for the toe, and the brushes upon the arch m for the top of the shoe, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the shoe scrapers or brushes, of the plate a, forming a platform and the dirt-pan thereof, substantially as set forth.
