Be it known that l, ROYAL FRAQZKLIN BAI- A l declare the following to be a full, clear, and

exact description ol' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon, which torni a part of this specieat-ion.

My invention relates to dust-pans, and has foiuits objects, first, to provide a pan the bottoni of which will ine-line from the front rearwardly, thus causing the sweepings to Inovc backwardly troni the mouth et' the pan, and also permitting the pan to be moved over the carpet with the minimum of friction; secondly, to provide a pan with the bottoni in clining from the front rearwardly and with its rear portion reduced, so as to receive the toe of the toot while the heel ot' the toot. is on the floor, whereby the pan can be held rmly in place by the foot,.and also slid along by it, while both hands are used for sweeping and the sweepings pass down the incline to the rear of the pan; thirdly, to provide a pan having an inclined base lip or flange at its forward end formed with a folded longitudinal edge to forni a curved or rounded edge which will permit the pan to be slid along the floor without catching in the carpet, and at. the same time facilitate the passage of the sweepings into thepan; and, fourthly, to provide the pan with a depending flange or lip at its upper end, against which the broom will press in sweeping the dust into the pan, and which will serve to clear the broom from adhering particles.

To the accomplishment ot' the Vforegoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the construction hereinafter particularly described, and then specitica-ll57 defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a. part hereof.

ln the drawin the letter A designates the pan as a wnole, formed, sav, ol tin or other suitable material and provided with the handle l, for carrying it from one point to another.

The bottom C of the pan is provided at its forward end with the lip or flange 1),' which inclines forwardly, as shown, so that the sweepin may easily pass into the pan. This lip or flange is provided with a curved or rounded edge, o, torlned by folding the metal over upon itself, so as to 'form a smooth edge that will not catch in the carpet or roughness in the door, and at the same time will add strength to the lip, the edge h terminating next to the metal composing the bottom ot" the pan, and thus altording additional strength. It will be noticed that the pan rests upon the door at onliT two points-that is, at the forward end by the inclined lip, and at the rear by the bottom proper of the pan-thc bottom between these points being above the licor. The practical et'i'ect of having the pan restas described is to form a bottoni inclining from the front rearwardly, so that the sweepings will inove bacluvardly from the mouth of the pan as they are swept therein.

The rear of the pan is rednced in depth,

say, by having the top E incline troni the front to the rear, so that while the heel of the foot rests upon the floor the toe can rest upon the body of the pan, and thus while the toot is in an easy position the pan can be held by it firmly in place while sweeping the dust into it, and can also be slid easily by the foot from one point to another while sweeping. A purchase and rest for the toot is thus afforded.

Y The sides F of the pan are out on a slope or incline at the forward end, as shown, so that the top will set back, say, three inches (more or less) from the lower front edge. Such Construction allows the broom to be placed in an inclined position best calculated for the eas; and most satisfactory sweeping of the dust into the pan.

In order to clear the broom from adhering or clinging particles of dbris and to insure the delivery of the sweepings into the pan, a flange or lip, G, is made to depend across the mouth of the pan, say along the front edge of the top E, so that the broom will brush against the edge of the flange or lip, and thus ICO have thc adhering particles scraped or knocked from the broom and fall into the pan as the front edge of the top sets back over the bottoni.

The flange or lip G is set at a forward and downward inclination, as shown, and is formed with the metal turned over upon itself, so as fo give increased strength, and also to form a rounded edge which will not cut or in j ure the straws lor bers of the broom.

The pan can be made at a small cost, and is stiff and strong' in all its parts, and easily manipulated by the foot, thus leaving both hands free for using the broom, an d receives and holds the dust without liability of it being carried back by the broom, and very effectually clears the broom from adhering particles. I have shown the top flat and inc-lined from the front to the rear end of the pan, as

such is the best form and possesses advantages; but it is obvious that the essential feature of the invention is having the rear portion flat in crosssection and inclined rearwardly, so that While the heel of the foot rests on the floor the toe will have a rm and leasy rest upon the flattened and inclined top.

inclined bottom C, provided at its front end with the inclined flange D, the sides having their upper edges tapering or inclining downwardly both to the rear and to the front, the flattened top E extending` from the rear lower edge of the sides to the point where said sides incline forwardly, and having the forwardly and downwardly inclined lip G projecting from along the front edge of the top E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture, the dustpan herein described, having the bottom inclined from front to rear and providedat its front with the forwarally-inclined flange D, the upright sides A, having their upper edges tapering or inclining downwardly both tothe front and the rear, the incline of the front edge being shorter and at a greater anglev than the incline of the rear edge, as shown, and the flattened top E, extending from the rear edge of the pan to the top of the rear ineline, 'substantially as and for the purposes set forth. f
