IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS` GALLEYS.'
'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: g l
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BAKER, of Warsaw, in the county of Kosciusko, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Galley; and I do hereby declareA that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hud to the accompanying drawings, makingpart Vor" this specification, and to tlierletters of reference marked thereon- Like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur. To enableothers skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention consists in making a printers galley having a sidegstik attached and adjustableby means oi" set-screws, and having an end piece dove-tailed in in such a Way that it may serve to brace the sides against the strain of the screws whileunder such pressure, and be easily removed, whenever desired to remove the matter from the galley. By means of a galley constructed in this way, the typewhen set in form, may be securely fastened without danger of forcing' the side strips out of" place, and the matter may be slid out of the end without deranging the forni.
Figure I represents a top plan View.
Figure 2 represents a sectional view on the line x.
Figure 3 represents an end view. t
In iig. l, a represents the outside frame of the galley, b the bottom, madeof brass or other metal, eV the side stick, d d d the. set-screws, passing through the side of the frame and attached to the side stick. In iiig. 2, d represents one of the set-screws, e the collar in the side stick to hold theendfof the screw.Y In iig. 3, gg represents the dove-tailed end of the detachable end piece. i
In constructing my galley, I make the outside frame aoi` any hard material, as well as the side stick c. The bottom I make of brass or otherA metal, with'srnooth surface, so that the form may be easily moved along it. The endsf of the screws I make with a small head and attach them to the-side stick c by means of acollar,
e, in such a way that they may turn easily. These screws areA passed through and jurk in the side of the frame. i The end piece A I make dore-tailed so that it may be putin or taken out of the end of the frame and form part of it, at pleasure. v
In using my galley, I place the end piece in its proper position, and the type in between the side stick and the side opposite the screws, and by turning the screws, lock it up tightly so that the galley may be mved about at pleasure without deranging the type. When I wish to remove the matter I release the screws, take out the end piece, and slide it out whenever it may be desired. In this way I am enabled to make a galley in which the matter may be securely locked and-kept at pleasure, or muy, whenever desired,be readily releasedand removed, and that Without the aid of wedges or quoin, or the usual devices of printers.
Having thus described my invention, and the niethod of using it, what I claim, is- A printers galley having the detachable end piece A, inA combination with the adjustable side stick c,- operated substantially as shown and described. l
