Description
UNITED STATES .JOHIN C. GRN, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
nvlPRovl-:Dv EDGE-PLANE FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,845, dated February 27, 1866.
.To all lwhom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN C. GRN, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria -and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Planes for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had tb the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specicatiou.
In the accompanying drawing,-Areprcsents a metallic box, which is attached to a suitable handle, B, said handle being slightly curved 'from the box A to the end ofthe handle.
The outer end ot' the box A is rounded, as seen at d, for the purpose of giving a finish to the edge or sole of the boot or shoe after being planed, as hereinafter described. This box has also a shoulder or gage, x, cast at the end.'
C represents a metallic block which sets within the box A. This block is provided with a narrow obiong opening to place the planebit in. A slot is also cut in the block C to allow the screw to press against and hold the plane-bit o inits place. The plane-bit 0 is made in the ordinary form and is set within the opening in the block C, as heretofore described. D is the screw which passes through the box A and through the slot in the block C, and resting against the plane-bit o, said screw PATENT OFFICE.
being set at a slight angle to more securelyT hold the block C and bit o in their places. B y extracting this screw the block C, with the plane-bit o, can be taken entirely from the box A, qor can be set or gaged the required thickness at either side of the box A.
rlhe object of this invention is obvious.
It will be seen that this plane-bit can be gaged to plane the edge of either a thick or thin edged boot or shoe, and either the right or left hand side of the edge-plane can be used, as either side of the box A acts as a gage for the edge to be planed.
It is a Well-known fact that theordinary edge-planes are generally made to suit but one thickness of a boot or shoe, while the one herein described answers for any thickness ot' a boot or shoe that is necessary to be planed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic box A, the metallic block C, the plane-bit 0, the screw D, and the curved handle B, arranged substantially as and i'or the purposes herein yset forth.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN C. GRUN. Witnesses:`
C. L. CEOWELL, A. BOWMAN.
