' Letters Patent 1Y0. 66,549, dated July 9. 1867.
IMPROVBD BED-BOTTOM.
TO ALL WHOM- l'l MAY CONCERN:V
Be it known that I, DWIGHT .BABCoCK, of' Seneca Fnlls, Seneca county, New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Spring-Beds, Seats, and Couches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', r,which-Will enable others skilled in the 'art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section ofmy invention, taken on the line x cgg. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken on the line yy, fig. 1.
lSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Thisinvention relates to a new manner of securing the upper slat of a spring-bed bottom, seat, or couch to the spiral springs,.and consists in the use f a ribbon, which is laid across the slats above a row of springs, and which is passed underthe'upper windings of each spring, thereby connecting and securely uniting the slats toI the springs without the use of other fastenings'or devices;
The invention also consists in' the attachmentof a spring-pillow piece to a spring-bed bottom, the upper slatof said pillow piece being secured to the springs below in the aforesaid manner.
A represents the frame of a bed, sofa, or chair; a a are strips therein arranged for the purpose cfsupporting and holding the frame B of the spring bottom. The frame B consists of side pieces, b b, and bottom slats,c c, which are firmly united together. C G are the spiral springs,'of which any suitable number is arranged upon each slat c, in any suitable manner. D D are the upper slats, which are arranged across the bottom slats, and placed upon the springs that are secured to the said bottom slat, as shown. E E are ribbons, made of any Asuitable fabric, both ends of each of which being secured to the side pieces b b of the frame B, or tothe ends of,
the bottom slats,`as is clearly shown in iig. 2. Thesev ribbons lare drawn from below through the upper ring of each spring, then Yoverthe s lalt D that rests on the spring, and then down again, on the other end of the slat, through the' upper ring of the spring, as shown in iig. 2. lThen the ribbon isdrawn to the next spring on the cross-Slat cabove which the ribbon is arranged, and connected to the same as before. The slats D are thus firmly connected with the springs, and still each can yield independent of the others. F is a board, arranged across the bed, close to and parallel with the head-board of the same, and firmly xed. Springs d dare arranged upon the same, and hold or support aboard, G, which is connected to the springs by means of ribbons ff that are passed over the said board G, and below the upper ring of the springsin the manner before described, and the ends of which are secured to the sides or under side of the board F, as is clearly shown in fig. 1. A very convenient headrest isth'us provided.
What claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Securing the upper slats D to the spring C, by means of ribbons E, substantially in the manner. and for the purposes herein specified and described.
2. Ahead-rest, arranged in a spring-bed bottom, and consisting of the boards and G, springs d d, and ribbons ff, all made, secured, and connected substantially inthe manner herein specified and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this-8th day of April, 1861.
l DWIGHT BABGOCK.
