Be it known that 4I, O. GARRETSON, of the city 'of Buialo, in the county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement inMop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation and Figure 2 a. fragmentary section of the adjusting nut and collar.l D of the movablejaw-framc C.

Like letters indicate corresponding parts in both drawings.

My improved mop-head consists essentially of three parts, viz, a screw-shank and cross-head A B, preferably cast as one pieceof metal; a jaw-frame C,lprovided with a collar or soeketnll), for the screw-shank A;

and a. nut, E, by means of which the jaw-frame C is made to move to and from ytlie cross-head or stationary jaw B to compress-or release the mop-cloth, the sides of the jaw-frame sliding in recesses ffin the ends of B to guide their movement. In connecting the jaw-frame with the adjusting nut, I prefer to employ the device shown, consisting of an annular flange, h, on the nut, in combination `with lips or lugs zz'on the sides of the collar, which embrace the flange h, but allow free rotary motion of the nut, which, when turned, causes the collar and jaw-frame to advance or recede with it along the screw-shank, and thereby bring the jaw-frame C nearer to or remove it from the xed jaw or cross-head B; but this I do not claim, it having been patented to Charles B. Clark and O. S. Garretson, May 22, 1866. But my invention is not limited to the combination of this device, as it is obvious that by threading the socket D to form a nut for the screw-shank A, and pivoting the latter to the cross-head, the nut E may be dispensed with, and the two jaws made to perform their functions of approaching and receding bysimply turning the handle G if connected rigidly with the shank, so as to revolve the latter. A like movement of the jaws would also be obtained by making the screw of the shank A s a sleeve, turning on the tixedvshank of the cross-head, in connection with the threading of the collar D; and in either of these modifications, which I regard as equivalent-s in respect to my improvement, the utmost simplicity is maintained, and only the three pieces of metal are required toform the mop-head.

yMy invention consists in the formation of thc jaw-frame or moving juw C of a single piece of metal, in combination with the fixed jaw B and its guiding recesses the moving jaw C being provided with a collar, D, which works upon the shank A.

The movable jaw of mop-heads is usually formed of wire, bent to enclose the fixed jaw., and the two ends passed through lugs ori the collar or nut which surrounds the shank, and secured by rivet heading. This involves considerable labor, and liability of breaking so small a casting as the collar, increasing the cost too greatly fOl Ml lltle which must be sold at a low price; and it greatly' diminishes the durability of the head, as the riveted ends become loose and break ofi` in a short time from the rough usage incident to theimplement; But the forming o f `this jaw and collar of one piece of metal, which muy be of wrought or malleable cast iron, obvintes both objections, as it dispenses with the cost of riveting, also with joints that are subject to becom( loose, and therebyincreases the durability of the article indefinitely. The necessity of forming the jaw-frame elongated at one extremity before putting together exists in the fact that the screw-shank must necessarily be of considerable length in order to secure sufficient range of motion of the jaws one upon the other to afllni of' the insertion of the mop-cloths between, and then removed.

What I claim as my'invention, and desire to secure by' Letters Patent, is-

The jaw-frame and socket C '1), composed of a single piece of malleable metal, in combination with the cross-head B, and screw-shank A, or its equivalent, when said jaw and socket have a reciprocating movement in consequence of the revolving of the socket; or of a. nut connected therewith, or of the se'rew within the same, substantially as herein described.
