IMPROVED VISE.
"Qi-ige tlgctnle retract tu in tlgese irttns ntrut nut mating nrt nf lip samt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that I, J. HOWARD MURRAY, of Trenton, Mercer county, New Jersey, have invented an improvement in Viscs," and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a nut, combining with the stationary jaw of a vise, and with the usual screw, as fully described hereafter; the whole being so constructed and arranged that the said nut may be readily removed and reinserted.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in whichl Figure l is a vertical section of a vise with my improvement, and
Figure 24a transverse vertical section on the line 1 2, fig. 1.
A is the front, and B the rear jaw ofthe vise; the former having a hollow arm, a, which fits snugly, but so as to slide freely in the jaw B. D is a. screw-spindle, passing through and arranged to turn in the front of thcjaw A, to which'it is confined by a set-screw, a; the end ot' the latter fitting in a. circular groove in the spindle, at the outer end of which is the usual enlargement b and handle d. The screwed portion of the spindle projects nearly to the outer endet the hollow arm a of the jaw Apits threads being adapted to the internal threads of a nut, E, which is ofthe peculiar form represented in tig. 2, and the front edge of which bears against shoulders s s on the jaw. The upper wing of this nut fits snugly in a recess, q, formed in thc inside of the holiow projection e of the jaw B, as also'dees the lower wing f', which isl confined by a set-screw, g.A The upper wing f, however, is so rounded at ac, and the recess'in which it itsis so formed, that after removing the screwspindle and withdrawing-the set-screw g, the nut may be turned to the posit-ion shown by dotted lines, iig. l, and then readily ,withdrawn from its place to make wny for a. new nut, should the latter be required, or for the reinsertion of the old one afterlbeing repaired. It will thus be seen that as long as the setsscrew g remains in its place, and any portion of the screw-spindle D is within the nut, the latter may be considered a permanent part of the jaw I3, and that the simple withdrawal of the set-screw and screw-spindle permits thc removal of the nut. The jaw B is provided as usual with side flanges t z, and a vertical flange, i, cach having holes for receiving screws, by which the vise is secured to the bench. l
I claim as iny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stationary jaw of the vise, with its shoulders s s', in combination with the screw D and nut E, the
whole being constructed as and for the purpose described. v
In te'stimony'whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. HOWARD MURRAY.
