@when tatas ste-at @ffice- IMPROVEMENT 1N BUTT MACHINES.
@the tlgetnl maretti in tigers trts irtmt 'unt milking pattini tige simu.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS TRACY, of New Britain, county of Hartford,'and State of'Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvementsv in Machinery for Driving Wires into the Joints of' Butts; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and representedin the following specification and drawings. And to enable others skilled in the art to make and use 'thesa-me, I will proceed to describe its con/structiony and operation, by referring to the dra\vings,lin which the same'letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
This improvement relates only to that part of a butt machine which performs the work of holding, distribnting, and driving'thc wire into the joints of'butts, without reference to any particular mode' or mechanism for applying the power for operating its partsgthenature .of which consists in so constructing the' mechanism for' holding and driving the joint wire into the joint of avbutt as to eifectually prevent it' or the driver from kinking. In the accompanying drawings- Figure l` is a top View. V l
Figure 2-is an end view of thcvdevice, which lies parallel with theend of a'butt, in readiness to receive the joint wire Figure 3 shows a top and end view ofthe driver-bar. I
a isa butt, placed'or moving through a` machine in the usual way, and resting at the point for receiving its centre pin or wire which completes4 the joint of thel butt. d is the device or bed which 4lies parallel with the line of the end of the butt a, in and near the centre of which is arranged a sliding driver-bar, c, so as to move in a straight line with the centre lofthe butt, on the upper edge and nearthe centre of which is formed a driver, d, of about three equal sides,l and equal to the diameter of the wire of-thebutt. This bar or driver d is operated in the yusua'l way of operating the'punch or driver usually employed for driving the wire into lthe joint of butts. n one side of this driver-bar c, and at the forward end, is made a wedge formation, e, and a button,f, of aboutthe same thickness of the driver-bar c,below the edge of the driver: d, having its edge g curved for the wedge formation of the-driver-bar c to work against, so that as the driver moves forward the button recedes, and as .the driver moves back the button is' reacted by a spring, h. The object of this but-ton f is to form a bcd for thewires te rest upon. is a Slide-or cut-olf, arranged so as to move back andforth in the bed, closely over the top edge of the driver d, and having its cut-oifvedge bevelled, so that its edge will slide between the wires and separate one from the others, to b'e driven forward into the butt-joint. c are wires placed in a receiver, the lower end of which is, open directly at the end of the cut-off, so that the cut-otl`regu lates their movements, and only one be discharged from the receiver at a time.
Now it will be seen that when the machineis set -in motion the wires cwill fall down between the sides of the bed-plate upon the button, the cut-oii moves forward over the upper side of one Wire. Thus it (the wire) is closely encased on four sides, when the driver-bar c d moves forward, forcing th-evwire'in a straight lin-e into' the joint of the butt without the least liabilityof crpoking 0r kinking. v
I believe Ilhave thus shown the nature, construction, and operation so as to enable-a person skilled to make anduse the same therefrom.
What I claim, therefore,. and desire to secure byfLetters Patent, isv I Claim the spring buttonf, and tongued bar c, or their equivalents, in combination with suitable mechanism for operating said har, substantially iny the manner and forithe purpose as described.
