INVENTOR 'oro Jr 1 J 1. e1-
HTTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT union.
JOHN ll. \VERN'ER, OF'EMSWORTH, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION TOY GUN AND TARGET. v
SPECIFICATION forming part t Letters Patent No. 648,716, dated May 1, 1900. Application filed February 21, 1900. Serial No. 6,057, (No modelfil T0 at when-z. it may concern.-
it known that I, .T onn I I. WERNER, acitizen of the l 'nited States of America, residing at Emsworth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Toy Gun and Target, of which" the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toys, and more particularly to the class of combination toy guns and targets.
The object of my invention is to construct a toy gun having a target connected at one end thereof carrying a spring-actuated tilting figure adapted to be operated by a-springactuated projectile carried by the gun.
A further object of the invention is to construct a device of this character which-shall be simple in construction, azni'ising, strong, durable, eiiicient in operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forininga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a ierspective view of my improved combination toy gun and target. Fig. 2 is longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. is a rear view of the target, showing the figurchcad in a locked position. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the figurehe'ad in a released posit-ion. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the mid of the barrel of a gun, showing the clamps for securing the target thereto. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional view 0': the gun-barrel. Fig. 7 is a perview of the plunger. Fig. 8 is a perew of the target, showing the arxf the various parts connected to thereof. '15; to the drawings by reference-nu- 'zicates the stool: oi the g um, and 2 the ha. .13? irovided with a bore 3 terminat- 7 ing at its top in a slot 4-, having the upper side thereof beveled, as at 5. The outer end of the gun-barrel is cut away, as at G, in which is mounted a pulley-wheel 7 having an elastic cord 8 passing over the same. The lower face of the barrel 2 is formed with a groove 9, in which is arranged the cord 8. This cord also operates within the bore 3. One end of the cord is connected at 10 to the barrel, while the opposite end thereof is secured to the cylindrical plunger 11, as at 12. The plunger at its outer end has suitably secured. thereto a headed stud or pin 13, and the opposite end of the plunger on its lower face is formed with a notch to receive the lugs 1% of the trigger 1'5, pivotally mounted in the gun-stock and retained in positioir hythe'spring 16. The plunger 11 slidably operates within the bore 3 and the stud or pin in the groove 4-.
The outer end of the barrel is provided with a pair of clamping-hooks 17, which operate through openings 18, formed in the lower portion of the target 19, and are adapted to socure the target to the end of the gun. The target 19 may be of any desired shape and is provided upon its outer face with a figure-- head 20, pivotally connected at its lower end to an elevating-spring 21. The target 19 is further provided with an opening above the.
openings 18, through which operates the headed releasing-pin connected at its outer end with a fastening-catch adapted to engage the top of the figure 20 and retain the same in a locked position. The inner face of the target is provided with a suitable ornamentation, as at 24.
The operation of my im proved gun is as fob lows: Assuming that the plunger is in position as shown in Fig. .l, the triggeris pulled,
It. is thought the herein-set-forih construetion of combination toy gun and target is one that will be exceedingly intercstingand amusslot through the upper side of said here, the
ing when in use, easy to operate, simple, du-
rable, and inexpensive to manufacture, and
plunger carrying a headed stud or pin leperatin g in said bore and slot and adapted to be retained in an inoperative position by the trigger of the gun, a target secured to the I engagement with outer end of said gun, a pin arranged-in said target, a fastening-catch connected to said.
pin, a spring-actuated figure pivotally connected to said target and adapted to be re tained in a lowered position by said catch,
and means for bringing said headed pin into said pin of the target for operating said catch to release the said figure when the trigger of the gun is operated, subv stantially' asdes'cribed.
In testimony whereof I affixmy -signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, JOHN n. WERNER."
