SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,085, dated August 13, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern:

. Be it known that I, GEORGE H. \VEsTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the county of Jefferson and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toy guns.

The object of my invention is to provide a gun which can be loaded from the breech and which can be employed for shooting either darts or balls; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of a toy gun constructed in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View.

The stock A has aforwardly-extending portion B, which makes up the lower half of the barrel, and to this portion B is rigidly secured, by means of clamps b b, the upper portion of the barrel B, to which is pivoted a verticallymovable block 0, the rear end thereof being held in place by a pivoted bail c, which can be moved over the end of the pivoted breech C. The lower portion B of the barrel is provided with a recess which, with the portion of the barrel above, forms a slot D, which slot intersects the bore of the barrel. Near the forward end of the lower portion of the barrel are rigidly secured loops (2 e, which may be made of a single strip of metal, within which are placed rubber or elastic bands, said bands being also passed through a fiat piece of semifiexible material E, which is preferably made of rawhide, though a flat piece of metal may be employed. The forward ends of this follower E have slots c, and said ends extend slightly outwardly. The part of the follower between which the ball or dart lies is at the bend of less diameter than in any other portion.

F refers to a pivoted dog, which has an upwardly-projecting portion f, and on its lower edge is provided with a notch f, with which the upper part of the trigger G engages, the trigger being pushed forwardly by a spring g, so that it will engage with the notch to raise the dog, so that the projecting portion thereofwill be forced above the slot D.

The barrel of the gun is provided with front and rear sights, the rear sight being carried by the hinged block C.

In the drawings I have shown elastic bands; but I do not wish to limit myself to such bands, though they are the preferred form, as a spring bow may be used instead of the bands. 7

When it is desired to load the gun, the bail o is thrown rearwardly, as shown in dotted lines, and the breech-block G raised. The follower E, to which the rubber bands are attached, is then drawn rearwardly and placed over the upwardly-projecting portion of the pivoted dog F. The ball or dart is then placed in the lower half of the barrel in front of the upwardly-projecting portion of the dog, and by the pressure exerted upon the follower E by the rubber bands the ends of the follower will be drawn together slightly, so as to press upon the ball or dart to prevent the same dropping out of the barrel when the forward end thereof is tilted downwardly. \Vhen the dog is released, by pulling upon -the trigger the dart or ball will be propelled with great force, and as the follower E reaches the end of the slot the resiliency of the rubber band is reduced, and the sides will move outwardly to their normal position, so that the ball or dart will be free to leave the same.

Then a bow is used instead of rubber bands, the breech-block may be provided with a spring to hold the ball or dart in place, the rear end of the spring being made fast to the breech-block, while the front is free and extends downwardly.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a toy gun having the spring-actuated follower, dog, and trigger, of a stop and barrel extending therefrom, a breech-block C, mounted upon a horizontal pivot and grooved on its under side to form a part of the barrel-recess, and a bail or loop 0,

and barrel extending therefrom, a yoke shaped follower of spring metal and elastic bands for actuating the same, engaging-dog and spring-trigger, a breech-block mounted upon a horizontal pivot and grooved on its under side to form part of the barrel-recess, and a bail or loop pivoted to the stock to clamp said breech, substantially as set forth.
