IMPROVEMENT SLEIGH-BRAKE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK COHLMEIER, of Kecks Centre, in the county of Fulton, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Sleigh-Brake; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in 'the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal'scction of a sleigh towhich my improved brake has been attached, taken through the line 3/ y, fig. 2, part of the runner being broken away to show the construction of the dog.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved sleigh-brake so constructed and arranged that whenever it is necessary for the horses to hold back the sleigh, the act of holding back will apply the brake with a force proportioned to the forward pressure of the sleigh; and it consists in the combination of the draught-bars, supporting bar, bent levers, and dogs with each other and with the frame and tongue of the sleigh, and in the combination of stop-levers and operating bar with the draught-bars and frame of the sleigh, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the runners B are the knees; C, the beams -D, the raves, and E the tongue of the sleigh; F are the draught-bars, the forward parts of which are connected to the forward ends of the runners Aby bolts or guide-pins passing through slots in the said bars. The roller e of the tongue E may be pivoted to the bars F in the front or rear of the runners A, as may be desired. The bars F pass back through holes in the forward knees B, and their rear ends are pivoted to the turned-down ends of the bar which is secured beneath the raves D by staples or other means so that it may be free to oscillate. f are pins passing through the bars F,
and which in drawing the sleigh forward rest against the rear side of the knees B. H are bent levers, made in about the shape shown in fig. 1, which are pivoted in a slotformed in the "middle part of' the runners A. The
upper ends of the levers H have hooks formed upon them which hook over the arms of the supporting bar G,
and to their lower ends are pivoted the dogs I, as shown in fig. 1. AS the draught-bars F are pushed backths lower ends of the bent levers H are depressed, forcing the dogs I out through slots in the shoes J so as to take hold of the roadway and retard the movement of the sleigh, the rear sides of the dogs resting against the rear ends of the slots through which they are made to project. In backing the sleigh the dogs I fold up into the said slots so as not to interfere with, the movement of the sleigh. If desired the levers H may pass downalong and be pivoted to the inner sides of the runners A, the dogs I working in notches formed in the inner edges of the shoes J. -In this case it will be necessary to cover and protect the levers and dogs by a plate or cap, K, as shown in fig. 2,'but I prefer the construction first described. L is a bar extending along the front side of the beam 0, to which are pivoted the upper ends of the lovers N, which are pivoted to the forwardside of the upper ends of the knees B, and the lower ends of which enter a notch in the upper edges of the bars F so as to lock the brakes in a raised position and prevent them from operating. The bar M may be moved back and forth to lock and unlock the brakes by means of an arm, m, formed upon or attached to its ends. The knees B may be strengthened against the draught by braces O, the upper ends of which are expanded into plates, through which pass the bars F, to strengthen the knees where weakened by forming holes through them.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An improved sleigh-brake formed by thecombination of the draught-bars F, supporting bar G, bent levers H, and dogs Iwith each other and with the frame and tongue of the sleigh, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth. I
2. The combination of the bar M and levers N with the draught-bars F, and with the frame of the sleigh, substantially as herein shown and dcscribecl and for the purpose set forth.
