PORTABLE WINCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,870, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed September 12, 1899, erial No. 730,282. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchellv ille, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Portable Winch, of which the following is a specification.
One object is to provide a simple, strong, and durable winch that will stand upright when not in use and that is specially adapted to be applied to the end of a wagon-box for hoisting the box or to a fence-post for stretching fence-wire in such a manner that arms or: branches extending laterally from the vertical centers of the ends of the frame will prevent tilting or lateral motion of' the winch when power is applied as required in practical use.
A further object is to reduce friction and wear of the rope relative to the frame as it is wound off and on the drum.
My invention consists in the frame and arrangement and combination of operative parts therewith, as hereinafter set forth,'pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the frame adapted for combining operative mechanism therewith to produce a simple portable winch andto serve as an extended bearing to engage the end of a wagon-box, a fence-post, or other object. Fig. 2 shows my invention applied to the end of a wagon-box, as required for elevating the box, when the rope connected with the winch is also connected With some elevated stationary object. Fig. 3 shows my winch detachably connected with a fence-post to draw and stretch Wire, as required in mak ing and repairing wire fences.
The metal frame is preferably malleable iron formed in a moldand may vary in size and weight, as desired. The two mating sides A and A are straight and uniform, and each has lateral downwardly-inclined and tapering branches B and B and a journahbearing O at the juncture of the branches adapted for mounting a rotatable shaft therein, and each end of the frame is flat and adapted to engage and rest securely upon or againsta fencepost or similar stationary object adapted to serve as a base upon which to operate my in.- vention advantageously for various purposes.
The outer ends of the branches are connected by flat curved cross-bars D and D and at the center of each of said bars is an aperture for extending a rope or chain therethrough.
F is a cross-bar connecting the top ends of the straight parallel sides A and A It is flat-faced and curved laterally and provided with an aperture H at its center for the passage of a rope J, that is fixed to a rotatable shaft K, that has journals on its ends fitted in the coinciding bearings C in the frame. By curving the cross-bar F the rope extended through the aperture H and fixed to the shaft K will be retained straight/in line with the exteriorof the drum or shaft and will not bind and wear by friction in the aperture through which it is drawn while being Wound on and off the drum or shaft K. A ratchet-wheel Z is fixed on one end of the shaft K, and a springactuated pawl m is attached to the branch B of the frame to engage the ratchet-wheel, as required to thereby lock the shaft K. A crank-handle r is placed on the end of the shaft K for rotating the shaft and operating the winch by hand. Ropes s and s are fas tened in the apertn res in the cross-bars D and D and adapted to be detachably connected with the corners of a wagon-box, as shown in Fig. 2, or in any suitable way as required for hoisting the wagon-box.
In Fig. 3 a chain 3', provided with a hook 8, is substituted for the ropes s and .9. (Shown in Fig. 2.)
J 2 is a clutch device fixed to the end of the rope J for detachably fastening a fence-wire J 3 thereto, as required to stretch the wire.
Having thus described the construction and application of my invention to different objeots for different purposes, its practical op eration and utility will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and
What I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent therefor, is
A portable winch comprising a frame composed of two vertical parallel sides having branches extending laterally and in opposite directions at their lower ends and journalbearings at the juncture of said branches, the branches connected at their outer ends and the tops of the parallel sides connected by a cross-bar curved in a horizontal plane so that its center lies directly above the edge of the the shaft or journal extended outside of the drum, said bar having an aperture to admit frame, all arranged and combined for the pur- 10 and direct the passage of a rope relative to poses stated.
the exterior of a drum, a drum or rotatable shaft mounted in the said hearings in the frame, a ratchet-Wheel fixed to the end of the shaft, a spring-actuated pawl attached to the frame and a crank-handle on the end of CHARLES H. ROBERTS.
