HOISTING DEVICE.

HOIS'TING DEVICE.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent 'No. 392,621, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed July '7, 18%.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. IVIODANIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mun ray, in the county of Galloway and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hoisting devices; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagon-body with a lifting device embodying the invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device, on an en larged scale, detached from the wagon-body.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a wagon-body, and B B designate beams or supports standing outward from a proper support, b, such as the side of abarn orhouse.
C is a transverse bar secured near its ends to the beams B by links a a at corresponding points and standing horizontal.
D D are sheaveblocks swinging from the bar 0 near the beams B, and E is a rope passing over the sheaves of said blocks. The front portion of said rope or chain is bifurcated or has two separate strands, e e, the ends of which are secured to the opposite sides of the wagonbody near the front end thereof. The rear end of the rope E has the lifting device F attached to it, which device is constructed as follows:
G is a downwardly-standing hook, the upturned point 9 of which is engaged in an open ing or recess made centrally in the under surface of the sand-board or other part of the wagon-body. The shank H of said hook is divided at its upper end into the two similar horizontal arms, h h, the end portions, h h, of which turn vertically upward, and are provided with bearing-openings for the shaft I, having the crank-handle J outside of one of its bearings.
K K are disks on the shaft I on the inner Serial No. 279,256. (No model.)
sides of its bearings and converting the said shaft into a spool, to which the rear end of the rope E is secured and upon which said rope winds.
L is a detent-bar having its lower end, Z, hooked in an opening in one of the arms h, and provided with the transverse curved arm M, that is adapted when the bar L is turned upward to catch against the crank-handle J and prevent the rope from unwinding from the shaft 1. The rope E has its rear end secured to the projection or tooth N, standing out from the shaft I, between the disks K, so that it will wind between said disks.
It is evident that by turning the crank-handle J the wagon-body can be gradually elevated by the exercise of a very small amount of power upon the part of the operator.
By shifting the links a a along the beams B B, the bar 0 can be quickly adjusted to the proper point to provide ample room for the width of the wagon-body and at the same time have it as close to the side of the building as possible.
Having described my invention, I claim The herein-described wagon-hoisting device,
comprising the beamsB B, the bar 0, thelinks adj ustahl y securing said bar 0 to the beams B B, the pulleys secured to the under side of the bar 0, near the ends of the same, the rope E, passing over said pulleys, having the diverging branches 0 c at its end, the hook G, having the upper end of its shank bifurcated and bent to form the horizontal arms h h and the vertical ends h h, the shaft journaled in said ends h h, and having one end of the rope E secured thereto, and provided with a crankhandle, J, and the detent having one end hooked in one of the arms h and adapted to contact with the crank-handle J, as specified.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. MODANIEL.
