S C 0 L LIN S NECKTIE FASTENER.
(Application filed Mar. 17, 1899.)

l/vvwmooeo SAMUEL COLLINS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTlE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,747, dated October 31, 1899.
A nman filed March 17, 1899.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in necktie-fasteners, and has for its object to construct a device that will engage the necktie at the bottom and in the center and which will hold the necktie in the proper position.
A further object of my invention is to construct a device which can be used not only as a necktie-fastener, but as a cuff-fastener as well.
In describing my invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of myimproved necktie-fastener. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base plate, one end of which is provided with a serrated edge 2 and being slightly curved, as shown at 3. Formed integral with the opposite end is an extension, said extension 4 being substantially at a right angle to the plate. Projecting in the opposite direction from the extension 4 is an extension 6, terminating in a serrated end 7. Projecting upwardly from the outer edge of the extension 4 is an ear 8, said car being provided with an aperture. Cut out of the plate 1 and bent upward therefrom is an ear 9, said ear 9 being opposite ear 8, formed on the center edge of the extension 4. Hinged to said ears 8 and 9 by ears 10 is a jaw 11, which is provided with a serrated end 12, said serrated ends 7 and 12 being adapted to mesh with each other. Op-
erating against the lower face of the jaw 11 Serial N0. 709,413. (No model.)
and the upper face of the extension 4 is a spring 14 of any suitable construction.
Formed integral with the plate 1 and on each side thereof is an ear 15, which is provided with an aperture. Hinged to the ears 15 by means of the ears 16 is a jaw 17, said jaw 17 being provided with a serrated end 18. The serrated ends 2 and 18 are adapted to mesh with each other.
Operating against the lower face of the jaw 17 and the, upper face of the plate 1 is a spring 19 of any desired construction and is adapted to normally keep the serrated ends 2 and 18 in engagement with each other.
When the device is used as a necktie-fastener, the lower end of the necktie is placed between the ends 2 and 18, where it is securely held.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the detail construction, such as placing the jaw 11 on the opposite side or on the underneath side of plate 1', without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
In an article of the class described, consisting of a base-plate 1 provided with an extension 4 projecting at right angles thereto, said base-plate being provided with ears l5 inter mediate the extension and the serrated end 7 a spring-actuated jaw provided with ears engaging said cars 15 and secured thereto, said jaw being provided with a serrated end engaging the serrated end of the base-plate, ears formed integral with the extension 4 and the base-plate,and bent upward at an angle thereto, a spring-actuated jaw secured to said ears, said jaw being provided with a serrated end and adapted to engage a serrated end formed on the extension, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
