BOOK MARK Patented Sept. 14, 1897.

ATTURNEYJ RUFUS STARR PIOKETT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BOOK-MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,907, dated September 14, 1897.
Application filed April 9, 1897. Serial No. 631,357. (No model.)
To all whom it may conceive.-
Be it known that I, Runus STARR PICKEIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of
t which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to book-marks, and the object thereof is to provide an improvement of the device for which Letters Patent were granted to me November 17, 1896, No. 571,453, and the object of which is to provide a bookmark of this class with a name-plate which is connected therewith; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists of the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an ordinary book, showing my improved bookmark placed therein; Fig. 2, a section through the central fold of the book, and Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a bookmark whichis composed of a piece of springwire, one end of which is flattened, as shown at A, and formed into a loop or hook, the longer arm of which is corrugated or Wedgeshaped in form, as shown atB, and said longer arm B is formed into a loop C, with which is pivotally connected at name-plate D.
The name-plate D is provided at one side with an oblong tubular attachment E, which is formed integrally with said plate or secured thereto and through which one side of the loop C passes, and said name-plate may have cut, engraved, or otherwise formed thereon a loop O is in the same plane with the hook A,
and in this device said loop (3 and the longer arm B of the device, together with the name plate D, rest in the fold of the book, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the longer arm 13 is also flat.
The name-plate D serves as means by which the device may be handled or manipulated, and it will be understood that said device may be connected with the book at any desired point, or may be used to separate any of the leaves thereof.
The book-mark is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and the spring action thereof is such as to hold it in place at all times, whether the book be closed or opened, and it will not therefore come out or be accidentally disconnected from the book.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 4 As an improved article of manufacture, a bookmark, comprising a blank of spring-Wire bent to form a yoke, consisting of a short arm and a long arm, said short arm being flattened, and said long arm being provided at the end thereof with a loop; a name-plate provided at one side thereof with a tubular attachment adapted to engage said loop, said long arm being corrugated, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of April, 1897.
RUFUS STARR PIOKETT.
