IMPROVEMENTS IN TRUNKS.

Be it knoivn .that I, ROBERT MGMURRAY, of Washington city, in the county of Washington, und inthe District ofv Columbia, 1naive 'invented u new and useful Trunk Sts-y, for staying the lids of trunks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom punying drawings, forming o part of this specification. I

My invention consists in providing one end of the stays used for supporting the lid of a trunk with a. coilL spring, or other similar device, so as to roil up the stoy, so as to keep the' lid from shutting down upon and cutting out the stay. In the drawingi Figure I shows an end'section of my invention, applied in o simple form to a. trunk.

O represents the trunk; 'A is the stsy, which` muy-be made either of catgut, webbing, chain, or other material. One end oi' this stay' is fastened to the lid ofv the trunk, and the other end is fastened tothe device used-for ceiling the stay. B represents the ceiling device, 4which is similar to .the Well-known. pocket-tape line, and consists of u. cylinder, a, tov which the eind ofthe stoy is fastened, und around lWhiehit is coiled. This cylinder `revolves upon an axle, b, extending from the plate c.' lA coiled spring, s, is enclosed within theoylinder a, and hosone end fast to the axle and the other end fast to the cylinder. i Y I i i This device, thusoonstructed, is let into the end of the trunk, as shown. When the lid ofthe'trunk is raised the stay is withdrawn, being unwound from its' cylinder, and the springis uncoiled. 'As the lid is closed the spring coils end winjds up thel stay within the chamber` e in the trunk, so ns to remove it from ail liability to be caught between or becut off by the lid and trunk. i

The ceiling devic'mny be constructed in various modes and may be applied also to thel lid of the trunk.
