TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that l", FRANCIS BAKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Steps, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to-make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The present invention 'relates to a novel arrangement of the steps of carriages, whereby when not in use they can be wholly encased -within the bottom or body of the carriage andkconeealed from view, as will be obvious from the following detail description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanyingplate of drawings, in which- `Figure 1 is a plan View of the steps when encased within the carriage body or bottom; and

Figure 2 a section taken in the plane of the line x x, tig. 1, but with the steps drawn out for use.

A, in the drawings, represents the body of a carriage; B the steps, which consist of 'a series hinged and pivoted together', as in the ordinary carriage-steps, so that they can be folded up, upon, and between the side bars of each other. The side-bars or pieces C of the upper step of the series of steps are lengthened, and extend through van. opening, D, in the side of the carriage into the chamber or box E of the carriage-body, where the whole series of steps, when folded into the upper step and pushed through the said spring D, are encased or enclosed, as plainly shown in iig. l of the drawings. The opening D being closed by means et' a door, F,`hinged to the saine, through curved arms, G, so that when swung open it will come below the upper step and out of its path, as shown in fig. 2. To prevent the steps from being drawn out too far, and to limit the extent to which they may be drawn out, the inner ends of the side-bars C of the upper step are provided with a catch or hook-piece, F2,tl1at comes to a stop against thecrossrail or bar G6Z of the box E placed therein at the proper point to allow the steps to be drawn out to the requireddistance. Tov hold the steps when drawn out and in an open position from being accidentally or casually thrown in or against the side of thek carriagebody, a spring-catch lever, H, is provided, which being attached to the cross-rail I of the upper carriage-step, springs info such a position against the edge 6 of the cross-rail Gr of the body, (see iig. 2,) and acts to hold the step from being thrown or pushed in, except they are pushed with a considerable force. J is a spring-lever catch, hung in box of carriage-body, in suitable position to engage with the folded carriage-steps when in the said box E, :1nd thus to holdthe'm from swaying or moving in' that'direotion, in combination qwith the fixedy stud or pins C of the box E, at the inner end of the steps.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. vThe combination, with a carriage-body, oi' a series of steps, whether more or less in number, when such steps can be folded up or together, and the said body is suitably constructed to receive and hold the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. I claim the spring catches H end J, whether used separately or together, substantially'as described for the purpose specified. a
