Description
i @uiten tetes 4gnent' @frn PHIN EAS STEER, 'OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT vOIF COLUMBIA.
Letters Patent No. 67,834, elated August 13, 1867. p
IMPROVED CHECK FOR TRUNKS.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN: Y p
Be it known that I, PIIINEAS J. STEER, of Washington, in the county of Washington, and in the District of Columbia, have inventeda. new and useful Check for Supporting the Lids of Trunks, Boxes, Sewing- Machine Covers, and similar cnsesg and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a. partof this specification.
My invention consists of an improvedmode of constructing the check used to prevent the lids of trunks from falling too far back when opened.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing a trunk fully open with my improved eheckf in operation.
Figure 2 is a. similar view showing the truuk partly open, and the check in the not of unfolding.
My improved check consists simply of two thin strips a and lof metal orilwood, jointed together at c, strip a being pivoted at d to the inner surface of-eaeh end of the trunk, end strip'b being similarly pivoted at e to the inner surface of each end of the lid of the trunk, as fully shown in the drawings. When thetr-unk is shut the strips fold partially past each other, the joint c descending towards the point x. When the'trnnk is opened the strips a and b assume a. straight line, :is ing. 1, and cheek or sustain the' lidi,` as shown and desired. When preferred, the strips a and?) may be let into the ends of the trunks, instendof beingfast to the inner surfaceas shown. i y
, My improved checl: isapplicable not only te trunks, but also to pianos, tool-chests, and boxes of all kinds provided with lids, sewing-machine cases, and the like. i
What I claim as new, and desired to 'secure by Letters Pal-tent, is-' The check" a b, when constructed and applied as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above-described invention, I heve hereunto signedniy nome this fifth day of June, 1867. I
P. J. STEER.
