AUGUST LINDGREN, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MOLINE PLOW COMPANY, OF ILLINOIS.
'PLOWSHAREi SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,726, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed January 3l, 1899- Serial No. 704,005. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST LINDGREN, of Moline, county of Rock Island, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plowshares, of which the following is a speciiication.
Cast-iron plowshares such as now eXtensively used are attended with a very serious objection-namely, their extreme liability to breakage due to the natural brittleness of the cast-iron, it frequently occurring that such shares are broken during the operation of attaching them to the plow. It is the aim of my invention to obviate this objectionable feature and to so strengthen shares of this character that the liability of their being broken is reduced to a minimum, or in the event of a breakage occurring the strengthening means will serve to hold the fractured parts securely together in their normal relative positions, admitting of the unimpaired use of the share, whereby it may, even though its cast-metal portion be broken,be effectively used and efiiciently perform its functions until worn out.
To these ends my invention consists in providin g the share with a tough-metal strengthening member, preferably in the form of a steel or wrought-metal strap embedded in the metal share during the casting operation.
The invention further consists in the details more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an inside elevation of a cast-iron plowshare, showing my preferred form of strengthening member applied thereto. Fig. 2 is acrosssection of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a cast-iron plowshare of customary form, and B a strengthening member in the form of a strip or strap of some stron ger tougher metalsuch, for instance, as steel or wrought-iron. This strengthening member is applied to the share at or near its longitudinal center and is embedded directly into the cast-iron composing the share during the operation of casting the same, whereby it will be held iirmly and securely in place by the cast metal flowing around and partially overlying its edges, as illustrated at C C.
I propose as the simplest and least expensive manner of producing the above-described share complete, with the strengthening member applied thereto, to place the strap of steel or wrought-iron into the mold in the desired position and then iill lthe mold with the molten iron which is to form the share proper, whereby the share on leaving the mold will have the strengthening member firmly embedded therein, as above described; but while I propose this as the simplest manner of applying the strengthening member it is to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to this mode, as the same may be applied in any convenient manner which admits of the accomplishment of the ends in view without departing from the scope of my invention, the essence of which resides in providing a plowshare with a strengthening member of tougher metal which will serve the functions of decreasing the liability of the share being broken and which will in the event of such an accident occurring hold the fractured parts securely together in their normal positions, thus admitting of the unimpaired use of the share. Further, while I have described the strengthening member as located at the longitudinal center of the share and while I prefer to so situate it, as in this position its strengthening qualities are more universal and in the event of a breakage of the share occurring it serves to more firmly hold the parts together, it will be understood that it may be located in any desired position which will not detract from its efficiency of operation without departing from the spirit of myinvention. So, also, the form of said strengthening member and the metal composing it may bevariously modiied in like manner.
It will be seen that by the application to a cast-iron share of a tougher-metal strengthening member I produce a share possessing -such durability and strength for all practical purposes as would be obtained in an entire steel or wrought-iron share and this without materially increasing the cost over that of the ordinary cast-iron share."
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination with a plowshare of a tough-metal strengthening member applied IOO 5. The combination with a cast-iron plowshare of a longitudinally-extending toughlnetal strengthening-strip embedded therein with the material of the share overlapping the edges of the strip; whereby said strip is held irlnly and securely in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, this 18th day of January, 1899, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
AUGUST LINDGREN. lVitnesses:
F. G. ALLEN, G. A. STEPHENS.
