IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,830, dated February 15,1670.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, T. E. C. BRINLY, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this speciication, in which- Figure l is a land side elevation of a castiron helve or standard for plows with my ilnproved heel attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.

My invention relates to the combination, with a cast iron standard for plows, of a wrought-steel or wrought-iron plate or heel, secured to the lower rear portion of the land .-side of such standard to prevent the rapid wear of the latter.

Heels of this description and for a like purpose have been used heretofore; but as far as I am aware they have never been made of wrought-steel or wrought-iron, but always of cast metal, and such cast-iron heels are objectionable, because on inserting a new one in an old and somewhat Worn standard it will project beyond the same, causing an increase in the draft of the plow. By making the heel of wrought-iron or steel it can be hammered down at any time by the driver or plowman to make it iiush with the standard.

In the drawings, A represents a cast-iron helve or standard of a plow, to the upper por tion of which the beam and handles are secured. Its lower front end is provided with a ange, as shown in Fig. 3, to which the share and mold-board are to be fastened. In the rear end of this lower parta recess is to be formed in the land side to receive the plate or heel B. This latter is to be made of' wrought metal, either steel or iron, so that, on wear.- ing out one, another can be supplied by any blacksmith. y

The heel is to be madeilush with the land side of the standard, and to this end the heads of` the bolts by which it is secured are sunk into it, as shown in Fig. 2.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The combination of the cast-iron standard A and the wrought-metal heel-piece B, when the former is provided with a recess for the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
