JOHN (G. F. SOHENOK, OF PERU, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES BRUNNER, OF SAME PLACE.
EMPROVEMENT IN PLOWSHARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,087, dated April 21, 1874; application filed September 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. F. SCHENGK, of Peru, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plowshares; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the aceoinpanyin g drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view, Fig. 2 a perspective view, and Fi 3 a rear view, of my improved plowshare.
Like letters in all the figures of the drawing indicate like parts.
This invention consists in thickening the under side of the heel or corner of a plowshare, to prevent, to some extent, at least, the corner of the share from wearing away faster than other parts thereof, and to furnish sufficient substance to renew and sharpen it when it becomes worn, thus increasing the durability of the share, and saving the expense of a new one until the other parts of the old share are worn out, as will be hereinafter more fully ex plained.
A is the share, having a triangular piece of steel, a, welded to the under side of the heel, and forming a part of the edge thereof, and thickened up on the back or upper side, so that the plane of the heel will run on the same level with the lower edge of the point B, thus securing an easy and steady running of the plow. The object of this attached heel, as before stated, is to furnish substance enough to forge out a new heel, or enable it to be sharpened when worn away.
In common shares (not having this device) made of a common thickness throughout, when the heel is worn out, it is impossible to renew the wasted steel by forging the substance out to form a new heel, and the stock being thus gone there is no substance on which to weld a new heel, and, consequently, this fact necessitates the throwing aside of the worn share and the substitution of a new one. Now, by thickening the heel of the share, as above dosoribed, the durability of the share is greatly increased, and the expense of a new one is thus dispensed with.
It is obvious that the heel of the cast-iron shares may be thickened by casting the triangular part on the share; also, that the inner edge of the attached or thickened heel may be made to run parallel with the land-sides, so as to act as a guideto insure the direct and steady motion of the plow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A plowshare having the heel or corner a thickened on the under side, to furnish sufiicient substance to enable the heel, after it is worn off, to be forged out and sharpened, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN C. F. SOHENGK.
