SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,583, dated March 21, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J AOOB L. READ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penna .in open condition with a balance-indicator thereon embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 represents alongitudinal section thereof on line x 50, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the usual leaves of a ledger, excepting that they are preferably made narrower than the covers thereof.

.13 designates leaves of stiff material which are placed at intervals between a group of leaves A and project beyond the sides of the latter, each having on its projecting portion the column 0, composed of a number of horizontal lines D for names according to those on the leaves comprising agroup thereofin the present case say eleven-and an up-anddown column E for the number of pages corresponding to those of said group.

Aside of the column 0 are sheets F, imposed one on the other and extending in the up-and-down direction of the book and secured by fastenings G to the leaf B, said fastenings passing through said sheets and leaf and having their heads and limbs engaged respectively with the outer face of the upper sheet F and the rear face of the leaf B, and said sheets having surfaces, such as silicate, from which matter written thereon may be erased or effaced by washing or otherwise.

The faces of the leaves'B are formed with recesses I-I, into which the sheets F are seated, sothat the latter, with their fastenings G, are comparatively flush with the bodies of the leaves B, preventing proj ections of said leaves and unnecessary thickening of the book,while the sides of said recesses form shoulders J, whichinclose the sides of the sheets and serve to guide the latter into the recesses while being applied to the leaves B and form guards which'prevent lateral shifting of the sheets between the end portionsthereof.

It will be seen that the names on the leaves A are duplicated on the column 0 and the accounts or balances on said leaves are noted on the upper sheet F, each in harmony with the lines D. By this provision the clerk can- When a fresh sheet will appear, and new sheets may be added, as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A ledger or similar book provided with an auxiliary leaf, the latter having a column for names in accordance with the pages of said book and a separate balance-sheet removably secured to said leaf, the latter being provided with a recess in which said sheet is seated, and shoulders at the sides of said recess within which the sides of said sheet are inclosed.

A ledger or similar book provided with an auxiliary leaf, the latter having a column for names in accordance with the pages of said book, a recess and shoulders at the sides of said recess, a plurality of separate balancesheets, seated in said recess and inclosed by said shoulders and removable fastenings passed through said leaf and sheets and secured to the opposite faces thereof.
