UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WV. WVILT, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ACCOUNT-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,587, dated Tune 12, 1900.
Application filed August 23, 1899- Serial No. 728,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: V
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. WILT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona,in the county ofBlair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Account-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to account-books for retail merchants who provide their customers with pass-books in which their purchases are recorded. As is well known, where retail dealers or merchants have a large number of customers who deal on credit there is much confusion and loss of time in recording the purchases and which frequently leads to disputes between the dealer and customer.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved account-book for each individual customer who deals onicredit having alternately-arranged gummed and ungummed pages, the gummed pages being formed with perforations forming coupons, which can be detached and secured to an ordinary pass-book.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the accountbooks, showing one of the gummed and perforated pages or leaves. Fig. 2 is a similar viewshowing one of the ungummed pages or leaves.
The numeral 3 designates the account-book, there being one for each individual credit customer and provided with about fifty leaves, more or less, as found convenient or desirable. The first leaf of each book is gumrned on the back, like an ordinary postage-stamp, and is ruled with lines 4 on the front or not, as desired. Said leaf is also provided with a number of transverse perforations 5, forming detachable coupons 6. The next leaf is plain and ungummed and not formed with the perforations. These leaves are alternately arranged and are secured together at the lower ends. p
In practice a customer is given an ordinary pass-book marked with his name and with the name of the merchant or dealer, and one of the account-books is similarly marked. A sheet of carbon paper is inserted between the coupon page and the plain page and when the merchant makes a credit sale he enters the transaction upon the coupon and transfers it to the plain page. In making the entry the amount of the sales will be entered above one of the rows of perforations, while the aggregate amount of the sales will be entered below the said row of perforations. The merchant will then detach the coupon on which said entry has been made and will moisten the gummed back and stick it in the pass book of the customer. Of course if the customer has failed to bringhas pass-book, which is sometimes the case, the coupons are not detached until he does bring it, the charges in the meanwhile being entered on the other coupons.
From the above it will be seen that there will be much time and labor saved in keeping accounts and greater accuracy will be assured, as there will be very little liability of mistakes occurring.
Having thus fully described myin'vention, what I claim is 1. An account-book consisting of a number of ruled and perforated coupon-leaves, gummed on their under surfaces, anda number of plain leaves arranged alternately with said coupon-leaves and both bound together, substantially as described.
2. An account-book consisting of a number of ruled and perforated coupon-leaves, gummed on their under faces, and a number of plain leaves arranged alternatelywith said coupon-leaves and both bound together and to a cover, said leaves being secured together at their free ends, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
