l'o all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State Aof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Premium- Books, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to book binding, and more especially to the leaves and to the matter printed thereon and its arrangement on one leaf relative to that on the next; and the object of the same is to produce an account vbook o-f that type by which merchants allow premiums to cash customers when their total purchases aggregate a certain amount as well as approximating the total purchases of a customer when desirable.

To this end the invention consists broadly of a bookwhose leaves have alternating units pages and total pages, with the unit designations on the one located in register with the total designations on the next when the leaves are superimposed so that a punch through or a mutilation of the former produces a corresponding punch through or mutilation of the latter, and a serial number on both types of pages for the purposes hereinafter explained.

The invention valso contemplates certain details and modifications as set forth in the following specification and shown in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of these account books with its front cover open and its first leaf doubled to show a portion of its` second page, the first coupon of the units `leaf or sheet being detached and the same coupon of the total sheet or leaf being` punched. Fig. 2 is a detail of the coupon which has been detached from the book shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail of the first leaf with its lower end bent` upward to show units on its back; and Fig. 4 is a detail of a portion of the first page illustrating a slightly different arrangementof the units designations and serial numbers, but with the group designations on the coupons the same.

In the drawings the letter C designates the covers, B the binding which may be simply a staple or staples fastening the leaves within the covers, U the units leaves which are preferably of one color as white, and T the totals leaves of another color as yellow, and all leaves arranged alternately throughout the book and secured within its covers by binding B. At I within the cover and at the head of cach page may be printed instructions or directions which it has been thought unnecessary to reproduce on the drawings. In contour the book is about 0 inches long by l-linches wide so that it will slip into the pocket or other receptacle.

The obverse or front page of each leaf is rinted with five cross lines and one longi-v tudinal line dividing it into ten squares or coupons S and a stub containing instructions I referred to. The lines on the units page are impressed into or perforated through the paper as shown. at l) and P', while the lines on the totals page are simply printed thereon as shown at L and L, but all lines on the several pages register so that the coupons S lie exactly over each other when the leaves are properly bound and the leaves are superimposed. Upon each coupon is printed a serial number N which in. the present case is 1002 as seen, and this number may appear once on each coupon or might appear five times on each coupon as shown in Fig. 4f. By preference it appears once on each total page and somewhere on the cover, and its purpose is` to afford means for keeping a record of the customer to whom the book is issued. This number may be impressed with a rubber stamp or otherwise, and its position is immaterial except that by preference it is located remote from points where the holes II will subsequently be made by a punch. Each coupon is also provided with a group total G which in the present case is 50c., and this also is located out of position where the punch holes will injure it. I consider the best places for these designations N and G near the central lines P and L. Each units page U is printed along its edges with a series of units designations u which in Figs. l 2 and i are 10c. each, and hence there are five on each coupon so that their sum will be equal to the group total. Each totals page T is printed along its edges with a series of totals designations t which in the present case run from 10c. to $5 as of necessity where there are ten coupons, and by preference these totals start at the lower end of one side of the totals page and run up that side to $2.50, and then start at $2.00 at the bottom of the other side and run up to $5. The position of these totals is such that they register accurately with the units u on the units page U when the two leaves are superimposed.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3 5 the group designation G is still 50c. but the unit-s designations are 5c. and hence there must be ten of them. In order to preserve their registry with the totals designations, I printl iive units designations on each face or page of each coupon, but in order that a punch hole made through the designation on one face shall not mutilate the designation on the other face I put them laterally out of register with each other. That is to say, the units designations u on the front face of the coupons S in Fig. 3 are along their outer edges like those in Fig. et, while the units designations u on the back or rear face of these coupons in Fig. 3 are inset somewhat from the edges of the coupons although not so far but that an ordinary punch could reach them.

In the use of an account book of this character, each time the customer makes a purchase amounting to or exceeding one of the units, the clerk punches through that unit on the units page and through the registering number on the totals page-holding both leaves together while he does the punching so that the hole H will destroy one of the units gures and simultaneously cancel the registering number on the totals page. If the purchase equals or exceeds the amount of the coupon S the clerk may tear olf that coupon as shown in Fig. l and punch the highest numeral remaining on the totals page. The coupon so torn off is turned in by the clerk to the bookkeeper, and by its serial number the latter may keep a check on the transaction. In the modification shown in Fig. t each c. purchase can be torn off vand turned in to the bookkeeper, because t-he serial number occurs opposite each 10c. designation; and in this case the perforations lD might be printed adjacent every units designation, although they are here shown as printed so that the designations occur in groups of five. This process is continued until one half of theleaf U shown in Fig. l is exhausted, and then the other half of the same leaf, after which the whole of the leaf T is torn off and given to the customer, and later she can present it as per` instructions and receive a suitable premium or rebate. In the modiiication shown in Fig. 3 the operation is substantially the same eX- cept that for each 5c. purchase a punch is made through the designations u until all five of them have been canceled, and then through the designations u until the rekmaining five have been canceled. This would obviously produce an outer row and an inset inner row of perforations through the totals leaf, although that might be 65 avoided by following the practice of omitting to punch through the totals leaf at the time of punching through the units in one row. Where the plan is to allow credit in multiples of 5c., this system may be employed, but I prefer that illustrated in Fig.

l. It is quite consistent with my invention that the merchants name and address and other advertising matter should occur on the cover, and also that the purchasers name and address might be written thereon to prevent loss.

I/Vhat is claimed as new is:

l. A premium book having alternately disposed unit and total leaves, the former provided with units designations and the latter with a series of total designations respectively registering with the units designations when the leaves are superimposed, and lines dividing both said leaves into coupons registering with each other,rthe units leaf having a group total designation on each coupon. y

2. A premium book having alternately disposed unit and total leaves, the former provided with units designations and with serial numbers opposite them and the total leaves with a series of total designations respectively registering with the units designa* tions when the leaves are superimposed and a serial number on each leaf, and lines dividing both said leaves into coupons registering with each other, the units leaf having group total designations on said coupons.

3. A premium book having alternately disposed unit and total leaves, therformer provided with rows of units designations along both their outer edges and divided by perforations into coupons, and the total leaves provided along their outer edges with a series of totals registering with the units designations when the leaves are superim- Y posed and divided by lines registering with said perforations.

4. A premium book having alternately disposed unit and total leaves, the former provided with rows of units designations along both their outer edges separated by longitudinal and transverse lines of perforations into coupons, and the total leaves provided along their outer edges with a series of totals registering with the units designations when theleaves are superimposed and divided by longitudinal and transverse lines registering with the perforated lines on the units leaves.

5. A premium book disposed unit and total leaves divided by lines into registering coupons the total leaves being printed with a series of totals ruiming through all the coupons, and the units leaves being printed with a group'total on each coupon and with units designations registering longitudinally with the totals on the total leaf when the leaves are superimhaving alternately posed and in number sutiioient on each coupon to make up the aggregate of its group total, the grand total of the total series corresponding with the sum of all the group 5 totals.

6. A premium book having alternately disposed unit and total leaves, the former `provided with units designat-ions on both faces, those on one face being in a row near 10 the edge of the leaf and those on the other face in a row set farther in from said edge, and the total leaves provided on one face with a series of totals registering with the units designations of one row when the leaves are superimposed, as and for the purpose 15 set forth.
