RIVETING TOOL.

4 Inventor NITED STATES JAMES F. SIGLER, OF PROVIDENCE, KENTUCKY.
RIVETING-TOO L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 614,903, dated November 29, 1898.
I Application filed February 24, 1897. Serial No. 624,7'74- (No modeL) To all 1071 0771, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES F. SIGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Vebster and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Rivetin -Toolsand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to riveting-tools or those adapted to apply a rivet or a fastener to leather or fabric. 6
My object is to provide a tool of extremely simple and cheap construction which will be adapted to apply the rivet quickly and easily in an improved manner.
Having the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain improved features, whose construction and operation will appear more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tool; Fig. 2, an enlarged vertical section on the line 00 a; of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view of the rivet. Fig. 4t is an enlarged detail elevation of the plunger. 4
The numerals 1 and 2 designate two handles, which are pivoted together at 3 and have the jaws 4 and 5, respectively. To the jaw 5 there is connected or formed integral therewith a supplemental jaw or arm 6. Said jaw 5 is provided with a die consisting of an annular protuberance 7 and a central point 8.
The numeral 9 designates a plunger, which is movable through the jaw 6. This plunger has a head 10 at its lower end and has a removable cap 11 at its upper end.
The numerals 12 and 13 designate slots made in the plunger.
The numeral 14 represents a sleeve, which is adapted to slide on the plunger, and the same has a pin 15, which works in the slot. There is a spring 16, which is located in the hollow plunger and bears against the pin, so as to keep the sleeve urged toward the slotted end of the plunger. At 17 there is shown a spring which encircles the plunger, and the same has its lower end resting against the head 10 and its other end connected to the supplemental jaw.
My improved rivet is shown in Fig. 3. This rivet comprises a head 18 and a hollow tubular shank 19, which is cut inwardly from its open end at 20, thereby providing a number of pointed knives 21. This rivet possesses many advantages over the old form, among which are that the pointed knives more readily enter the material, and they are more readily spread and clenched down by the punch.
The operation is as follows: A rivet is dropped down in the sleeve, so that the head of said rivet will rest on the plunger. The leather is passed between said sleeve and the die, and when pressure is applied to the handle the jaw 4: presses against the plunger and pushes the rivet into the material, while the spring pushes the sleeve against the material. After the shank of the rivet has passed through the material the projection 8 of the die is received in the end of said rivet and the knives are spread or clenched down upon the material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with handles pivoted together and a die carried by one of said handles, of a plunger actuated by the other handle and which has slots, a sleeve encircling the plunger, a pin connected to the sleeve and working in the slots, and a spring urging said sleeve.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with handles pivoted together and one of which carries a die, of a supple mental jaw or arm connected to one of the aforesaid handles, a plunger movable through said supplemental jaw and adapted to coaot with the die, a spring encircling the plunger and bearing against the same and against the supplemental jaw, said plunger being provided with slots, a sleeve movable on the plunger, a pin connected to the sleeve and working in the slots, and a spring adapted to urge said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES F. SIGLER. Witnesses: J. T. DIXON, T. '1. MORRIS.
