To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN W. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button Removers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in button removers. y
My improved button remover is. in the embodiment illustrated, especially designed by me for removing sewed shoe buttons, although my improvements are desirable for embodiment in structures adapted for removing other types of buttons.
The main object of the inventionis to provide an improved button remover for sewed buttons by meansof which the buttons may be quickly removed without injury to the button, or to the fabric, or leather upon which it is sewed.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
T accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a. preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

lln the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, ll provide a pair ofjaws 1 and 2 having handles'3 and 4, respectively. The jaws and handles are, in practice, preferably sheet metal stampings. The lower jaw 1 is provided with upwardly projecting side flanges 5, while the upper jaw 2 is provided. with downwardly projecting side flanges 6 disposed between the flanges of the lower jaw. The jaws are pivotally connected by means of the pivots 7 formed by striking in parts of the flanges ot the lower jaw, the pivots engaging pivot openings 8 in theupper jaw.
The handles are preferably channelshaped in cross section, as illustrated. The flange portions of the handles are continuations or extensions of the flanges 0n the sides of the jaw. The lower jaw is provided with a T-shaped slot 9 adapted to receive the attaching threadot a button or the shank of a button and its attaching thread.
The side flanges oi the upper jaw have inturned button engaging portions 10, the
edges of which are spaced to form a slot ll adapted to receive the eye of a button or the thread of a button, as the case may be.
A knife 12 having an upwardly beveled A-shaped cutting edge 13 is slidably mount ed on the lower jaw between its side flanges. Lugs 14 are struck in from the side flanges of the lower jaw to slidably retain the blade. The blade has notches 15. in its edges which are engaged by the downwardly projecting lugs 16 on the side flangesof the upper jaw so that when the jaws are separated the knife is actuated across the slot 9, severing the thread which is drawn up through the slot by the separation of the jaws, as shown in Figs. VI and VII. j
To collect the severed buttons I provide a closure plate 17 for the open inner side of the upper handle-the forward end of the plate being engaged with the rear end of the button engaging member of the upper jaw, while the rear end of the plateis secured within the handle .by the rivet 1?. By holding the implement in an inclined position when severing buttons the buttons will drop into this holderwhich is adapted to receive several of them. The buttons may be discharged merely by tilting the implement forwardly. The jaws are held in their closed position by means of the coiled spring 18, the rearv end of which is secured to a tongue 19 struck up from the handle 3, while the forward end is engaged with the end of a bar 20 one end of which is s'lidable within the handle 3 and the other end of which is engaged with a lug 21 on the upper handle.
My improved button remover is well adapted for the removing of sewed buttons from shoes and the like, the same being capable" of very rapid manipulation. The attaching; threads of the buttons are severed without injury to the fabric or leather to which they are attached.
I have illustrated and described my improved button remover as I have embodied 'tl'IBESaIHG for removing-shoebuttons. I have notattempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and adaptations which mightbe desirable for removing other styles of buttons as it would lee-largely a matter of changing the design of the implement to accommodate the diflerent sizes and styles of buttons. I y
Having thus described my invention, what lclaim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure :of the class described, the combination of a pair of slotted jaws, the lower jaw having upwardly projecting side flanges between which the upper jaw is disposed, the upper j aw having downwardly projecting side ,iflanges with inturned button I engaging members spaced-t0 formthe shank slot of the upperja-W, :the lower jaw having pivots struck in from itsside flanges engaging pivot openings inthe side flanges of the upper jaw, said jaws being provided with handles, and the upper jaw handle being .channelsshaped in cross section, a knifes'lidably mounted on [the lower jaw and having an 'A-shaped upwardly E'beveled cutting edge, the lower jaw having retaining lugs under which said blade reciprocates struck in therefrom, and said upper jaw having lugs on its side flanges engaging said blade whereby it is reciprocated :by the rocking of thejaws ontheir pivot, and a' member dis- ;posed to coact with the upper :handle to provide a button holder, the front end of said member being engaged with the rear edges of the button engaging members of the upper jaw, and its rear end being secured to the upper aw handle .2. In a structure of the class described. the combination of a pair of slotted jaws, the lower .jaw having upwardly projecting side flanges between which the upper jaw is disposed, the upper jaw having downwardly projecting side flanges with inturned button engaging, members spaced to form the shank slot of the upper jaw, the lower j aw having pivots struck in from its side flanges engaging pivot openings in the side flanges of the upper jaw, and said -jaws being provided with handles, and a knife slidably mounted on the lower jaw and having an A-shapcd upwardly beveled cutting edge, the lower jaw having retaining lugs under which said blade reciprocates struck in therefrom, and said upper jaw having lugs on its side flanges engaging said blade whereby it is reciprocated by the rocking of the jaws on their pivot.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of pivoted jaws slotted to receive the shank of a button, the lower jaw having upwardly projecting side flanges between which the upper jaw is'disposed, the upper jaw having downwardly projecting side flanges with inturned button engaging members spaced to form the shank slot of the upper jaw, said jaws being provided with handles, and the upper handle being channel-shaped in cross section, a knife slidably mounted on the lower jaw, means for actuating said knife when the jaws are separated, and a member'disposed to coact with the upper handle to provide a button holder, the trout end of said memher being engaged with the rear edges of the button engaging members of the upper jaw, and its rear end being secured to the upper jaw handle.
4. In a structure of the class described. the combination of a pair of jaws slotted to receive the shank of a button and its attaching thread, said jaws having side flanges disposed one within the other, the flanges of one jaw having pivots struck therefrom engaging pivot openings in the flanges of the other jaw, said jaws being provided with handles. and the upper jaw handle being channel-shaped in cross section, a knife slidably mounted on the lower jaw, means for actuating said knife on the separating of the jaws, and a closure member for the open side of the upper handle to provide a button holder, thd front end of the closure member being disposed between the flanges of the upper jaw.
5. In a structure of the class described. the combination of a pair of jaws movable toward and from each other. the lower jaw having a T-shaped slot adapted to receive :the thread of a button, and the upper jaw being adapted to engage a button. a knife slidably mounted on the lower jaw and having an A-shaped upwardly beveled cutting edge, and means for actuating said 'kniite when the jaws are separated. the upper j aw being provided with a handle adapted as a button holder.
6.
