and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to riveting devices; and the object in view is to provide a simple, cheap, and reliable riveting-tool which is especially designed for repairing harness and the like, the same being provided with means for .holding a rivet preparatory to the insertion of the same through the harness or other article and for releasing said rivet after the same has been spread and clenched, the holding and releasing means being automatically operated by the movements of the handles in the act of setting and clenching the rivet.
The invention consists in a riveting-tool embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated inthe drawings, and incorporated in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective view of the improved rivetingtool. Fig.2 is a sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the rivetholder. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one jaw of the tool, showing the means for spreading and clenching the end of the rivet. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one of the rivets used in connection .with the riveting-tool.

The improved riveting-tool contemplated in this invention comprises, essentially, a pair of handles 1, which are pivotally connected, as 'shown at 2, where they cross each other, the said handles being extended to form a pair of jaws 3 and 4, arranged opposite each other and adapted to be moved toward and away from each other as the handles 1 are vibrated. The jaw 3 is provided upon its inner side with a projection in the form of a spreading-stud 5, of tapered form, adapted to enter the open tubular end of the rivet, and an annular rib or flange 6, which surrounds the Serial No. 6 34,3 3 0. (No model.)
stud 5, so as to leave an annular groove 7, in which the tubular end of the rivet is received and by means of which the end of the rivet is spread, so as to clench the same upon the strap or harness or other article to which the rivet is applied.
The rivet, which is illustrated in Fig. 5, consists of a fiat head 8 and a tubular shank 9, which, if desired, may be split at ornear its extremit y for facilitating the spreading thereof. The head of the rivet is adapted to be held against the opposite jaw 4 by the following device: 10 designates the rivet-holder, which is preferably constructed from a thin piece of sheet spring metal. This piece of metal is bent in U shape, so as to embrace the jaw 4 and extend entirely across the inner active surface thereof. The holder 10 is provided at its outer edge with a notch 11 of a size which will receive the shank of the rivet, thus allowing the head of the rivet to 'lie between.
a longitudinal slot 12, through which passes a headed pin or stud 13 for preventing displacement of the holder 10, while allowing the same to slide longitudinally on the jaw 4.
The holder 10 is also provided at one side of the implement with an ear 14, having an opening in which is received one end of an operating link or rod 15, the opposite end of which is provided with an eye 16, through which passes'a fastener 17, the latter enteringan opening in one of the handles of the tool. Several of such openings may be provided along the handle, so as to adjust the position of the fastener 17, thereby varying the throw and position of the holder 10 for adapting the same to rivets of different sizes.
In operation the handles are opened and the head of a rivet is thrust under the holder or between said holder and the jaw 4, so that the shank of the rivet lies in the notch of the holder. The harness or strap or other article to be riveted is now introduced between the end of the rivet and the jaw 3, whereupon the handles are pressed together, the rivet beingforced through such article. Upon the end of the rivet coming in contact with the jaw 3 such end is spread in the manner above indicated, which serves to clench the rivet upon the article. At the same time and simultaneously with the closing of the handles the holder is slid inward on the jaw 4, passing out of engagement with the head of the rivet and allowing the clenching-tool as a whole to be readily withdrawn as soon as the rivet is clenched.
By means of the tool described harness may be repaired without the necessity of taking the same off the animal, thus effecting a great saving in time and labor. The implement, together with a number of rivets, may be readily carried in any vehicle, where it will be ready for use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A riveting-tool consisting of two pivoted handles having jaws 3 4, said jaw 3 being provided with a spreading-stud surrounded by an annular rib or flange, and the jaw 4 with an integral headed pin or stud, a substantially U-shaped rivet-holder embracing the upper face and sides of said jaw at and provided with a rivet-receiving opening and a slot through which said integral headed pin or stud projects, and a rod connecting the holder and one of the handles and adapted to shift the holder when said handle is moved, substantially as described.
2. A riveting-tool consisting of two pivoted handles 1 having jaws 3 4, said jaw 3 being formed with a spreading-stud 5 surrounded by an annular flange 6 forming a rivet-shankreceiving groove 7, and the jaw 4 with an integral headed stop-pin 13, in combination with a substantially U-shaped rivet-holder 10 embracing the upper face and sides of the jaw 4 and provided with the recess 11, slot 12 through which said integral stop-pin projects and pendent ear 14, and a rod 15 connecting said ear and one of the handles, and adapted to shift the holder when said handle is moved, substantially as described.
