IMPROVED CLAMP.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STREVELL, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Clampg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved clamp, especially intended for use in connection with a machine for the stretching of leather, in the manufacture of machine belting or banding, although it can bel applied for other and various purposes. And the invention consists in a novel construction of the clamp, which will be hereinafter particularly described, vreference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the same.
Figure 2, a central vertical section, taken' in the direction of the length of the clamp; and
Figure 3, a transverse vertical section, taken in the plane of the line x x, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A and B, in the drawings, represent the two jaws of the clamp, between which one end of the leather to be stretched is placed and secured; 4These jawsA and B, are one above4 another, withlthe lower one fixed'in position in anysuitable manner, `while the other is movable, and is arranged to move up and down from the lower one, in and-between the two side bars C, of the upright straps or clasps D, one at each end of the xed jaw. The movable jaw is provided with a raised edge, a, along both of its-parallel sides, between the clasps D. E, a strip or abar, having at or near each end a similar wedge-shaped piece, F. This bar is placed in the clasps D, from one to the other, passing along and over the top of the movable jaw, between its raised edges a, when driving the same into and through 'the clasps, until it has become firmly wedged therein. The movable jaw is thereby made to tightly grasp the leather which may have been placed in and between the two jaws, and firmly hold the same in place; the contact surfaces of each jaw being provided with ribs, In, to cause a more firm and reliable hold to be had by them upon the leather. By forming the strip E with two wedge-shaped pieces, as above described,.one to each oi' the clasps D, the movable jaw is made to come down upon the leather, provided it is of an even thickness, or nearly so, with a more uniform and even pressure through its whole length, and besides, the danger of overstraining one portion of the clamp is avoided; it being here remarked, however, that in case there should be any great variation in the thickness of the leather, an additional piece' or pieces may be used inV the straps or clasps D, to cause an even action of the wedge strip E, as is obvious. In lieu of only two wedge-shaped pieces to the strip E, more may be formed in connection therewith; but for the manufacture of machine belting or banding two are suilicientfor any and all ordinary widths of such bands.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved clamp herein described, the same consisting of two jaws, A B, straps or clasps D, and wedgestrip E, when all combined together, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
., Y WM. STREVELL.
