TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, HIRAM L. CHASE, of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc, and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved 'Press or Cover for Tubs, Barrels, the.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a'vertical cross-section of my improved press or cover, taken through the line x x, iig. 2, and showing in red lines the relative position of the eask to which it is applied.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section, through the line y y, iig.' 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple, convenient, and effective means for keeping salted meat, pickled fish, or any other articles under the pickle or brine to preserve them; and it consists in the combination of two eecentrically pivoted arms. with the press or cover in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
A is the press or cover, which should bc made of such a size as to easily be put into and removed from the Cask. To the upper side of the cover A are attached two cross-bars, B, which are grooved longitudinally upon their inner sides, as shown in iig. 1, the upper sides of said grooves having cavities' or notches formed in them somewhat similar to rack-teeth for the reception of the pivoting pins c of the arms C. The arms C are made substantially in the form shown in the drawings, and they are pivoted to and between the cross-bars B by pins c passing through their lower ends near one corner or out of the central line of their length, as shown in iig.
1, so that when the arms C are erect in the position shown-inred in g. 1, they may easily be moved back and forth through the-space between the cross-bars B, the pivoting pins moving through the grooves in the sides of said cross-bars; but when inclined, :1s-shown in black in iig. 1, so that their upper ends may rest against the inner sides of the caslc to hold the *cover or press A down, the pivoting'pins c will enter the cavities or notches inthe upper sides of the grooves in which they work and hold the arms C securely in place. If desired, a small metallic plate, o'r its equivalent, may be attached to the upper ends of the arms C, as shown in the drawings, to enable them to take a surer hold of the sides of the cask. i
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of one or more eccentrically pivoted arms C, or their equivalent, with the cover or press A, substantially in the manner herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth..
