Description

@uitrit tetes gstmt @fitta INLAND T. BOUTELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT. Leiters Patent No. 68,161-, and August 27, 18er.'
IMPROVED CLOTHES-PIN.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN: l
Be it known that I, H. '.l. BOUTELL', of Springfield, in the county of Windsor, and State of Vermont, have invented anew and improved Clothes-Pin, and that the following description, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of' my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others ot a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates toa new and improved clothes-pin, of simple and economical construction, which admits of being readily adjusted to the line, so as to secure the clothes thereon and effectually prevent-the same being casually detached from the line. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure l is aside view of my invention, partly in section.
Figure 2, a transverse vertical section ofthe same, taken in the linex'zr, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. l
A represents the body or stock of the clothes-pin,l constructed of wood', and having a slot, a, madelongitudinally init from its under side, said slot being about square, and nearly as large as the dimensions of the stock will allow. In this slot a there are fitted two jaws, B B, which work on pivots or pins I) b, and thesejaws have the ends of a wire spring, C, bearing aga-inst them, said spring being fitted within the slot a, and having a tendency to keep the inner ends of thejaws in contact with each other, as will be fully understood by referring to iig. 1.` The upper ends of the jaws are notched out to receive the clothes-line D, and the body or 'stock has n. transverse slot, e, cut in it, to admit of the jaws being iitted over the line andthe clothes placed thereon.
It will be seen from the ahove description that the clothes-pin may be fitted on the line and over the clothes bysimply pressing the pin down upon the line, butin order to disengage it the lower ends of the jaws which extend below the line require to be pressed together. The pin, therefore, cannot be casually disengaged from the line'and clothes thereon. i Y
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim as new, and ldesire to secure by Letters Patent--l The twocla-mps' B and the spring C a, arranged and operating in the stock A, as herein set forth for the purpose specified. i i
H. '.r. BoUTELL.
