Be it known that 1, PETER KELLEY, shoemaker, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-Lasts, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of the Dominion of Canada, dated August 17, 1897, No. 78,194;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in lasts; and it consists in a last the body of which is formed of one or more pieces, combined with a removable upper piece or portion, and a hook and eye for fastening the upper portion in place upon the body of the last, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to secure the removable upper portion of the last in position by means of a convenient form of fastening which will allow this upper portion to be instantly rigidly locked in position or quickly detached from the body of the last, as may be desired, and thus dispense with the usual nails or tacks which are so generally used for fastening the upper portion in place and which split and injure the wood and which require tools for both driving them in and removing them from position.

In the accompanying drawings, which represent my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of a last to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the heel portion alone. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the toe portion alone. Fig. 5 is an inverted view of the top removable portion of the last.

A represents the heel portion of the last, which, as here shown, is provided with a vertical dovetailed groove through its front end, and B the toe portion, of any desired shape that may be preferred and which is provided with a dovetail piece upon its inner end to catch in the groove in the part A. By this construction the heel-piece may be used in connection with toe-pieces of different forms and shapes, according to the make the shoe requires. By this construction it will be apparent that the toe portion can be removed from the heel portion without regard to the fact as to whether the top portion is secured in position or not, thus making it possible to change the toe portion at any time without necessitating the removal of the top portion before doing so.

The removable top portion O of the last may either be of the shape here shown or any other preferred and has preferablya hook D fastened upon its upper end, and which hook is made to catch through an eye E, which extends up through a slot or groove in the inner end of the part 0. This hook catches through the eye and locks the part 0 securely in position at its upper end. Should it be so desired, the hook may be pivoted upon the heel portion, as shown in Fig. 3, instead of upon the block; but I prefer to place the hook upon the upper block, as shown in Figs.

1 and 2. By means of this hook and eye the block O can be instantly fastened in position or released and the hook and eye take the place of the usual tacks or nails which are driven through the upper end of the block and which require a tool both to drive in and to remove them. The lower end of the block is held in position by means of a pivot F upon the toe-piece, which enters a groove F. in the lower end of the" piece 0.

A last constructed as above described is equally useful to the manufacturer or repairer, saves much time in fastening and disconnecting the parts, and prevents all injury to the wood.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a last, the combination with the heel portion; and a top portion removably secured thereto; of a toe portion removably connected to said heel portion, said toe portion being arranged to be disconnected from said heel portion independently of the disconnection of said top portion,snbstantia11y as describedl 2.
