No. 241,606. Patented May 17,1881.
///l A W.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEXTER F. BURTT, oE BERWIGK, MAINE.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,606, dated May 17, 1881.
Application filed April 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DEXTER F. BURTT, of Berwick, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Boot and Shoe Lasts; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view of the last complete. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, the top removed. Fig. 3 is a top view of the body of the last, the top portion being removed. Fig. 4 is a bottom view with the sole-piece removed. Fig. 5 is a view of the sole-piece. Fig. 6 is a View of the top.
This invention has relation to lasts forthe use of shoe-makers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the metal last frame having recesses in its upper,'sole, and heel portions, separated by a horizontal and transverse partition, and having a longitudinal guide and strengthening-bridge, in combination with the wooden heel and sole fillings and'the grooved upper block, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the metallic frame or body of the last, hollowed out in its upper portion at I) and in its sole portion at 0, a horizontal partition, 6, separating the sole-recess from the upper-recess. The walls of the recesses are of about the uniform thickness of one-eighth of an inch and extend fully to the sole below, but
are cut away in concave curves d fromjhe;
upper part of the heel portion to the toe, for the reception of the upper-block g, which is curved on its under side in convex form to correspond with and slide on the curves at of the metal body. Between the outer walls of the upper-recess is formed in the body a longitudinal bridge, h, extending from the toe to the heel portion and rising from the horizontal partition e, terminating in aconcave upper edge, It, extending-a little above the edges of the (No model.)
walls of the upper-recess. The object of this bridge his to strengthen the frame and to serve as a guide for the block g, which is provided with acentral longitudinal groove, l, to engage therewith.
'It is not essential that the bridge h shallbe concave on its upper edge, as sometimes this form may be varied.
From the rear of the last-body a recess, m, is made into the heel portion, which is separated from the upper and sole recesses by the vertical transverse partition n. Into this recess the wooden heel-plug p isintroduced. In the sole-recess c is placed the sole-block s, which extends from the solid toe portion t to the heel portion o of the sole, these parts tand I; being of metal, so that the nails can be clinched, except when the peggin g is carried around the toe and heel, when the wood is filled in over the entire bottom of the last, the partition 0 extending from end to end.
Instead of wood, any suitable material may be used for the sole and upper blocks and heel plug. The sole-block may be fastened in by means of the screws 2 passing through holes in the sides of the last-body.
Thelast-body is very light, being a shell with skeleton-partitionathe fillings serving to complete the contour of the parts whereon the work is performed.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-- The metallic skeleton-last having the horizontal partition 0, transverse partition n, guide: bridge h, and upper, sole, and heel recesses, in combination with the heel-block p, sole-fillin g s, and centrally-grooved upper-block g, substantially as specified. I
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DEXTER FRANKLIN BIIRTT.
