DAVID DUHALDE, OF ST. GOIN, FRANCE.
LAST FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec; 283, 1915.
Application filed January 28, 1914. Serial No. 815,083.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID DUHALDE, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in St. Groin, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Lasts for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification. Y 1
A last in accordance with this invention consists of a combination of a hollow portion and a solid portion (made in one, or more than one, part) introduced into the hollow portion which is open at its rear, to facilitate this introduction, this combined last rendering it possible to proceed with the lasting and then to the mounting of the upper leather with brads, or the like, without any diificultv iust as on an ordinary last, and without removing the vamp from the last (as is done with lasts as hitherto made) sew, or tack, the upper leather to the sole after removal of the solid portion of the last.
The accompanying drawing shows an example of a last made in accordance with this invention, Figure 1 showing, in side view, aid Fig. 2 in transverse section, the hollow portion combined with the solid portion. Fig. 3 shows separably the solid portion partly in section. Figs. 4 and 5 show the hollow portion separately in side elevation and plan respectively.
' The solid portion is shown as being made in two parts a and b of wood or other suit able material.
The upper part a extends a little beyond the lower part b so that it can rest on the upper edge of the hollow portion h and be flush with it. The upper part a; is connected to the lower part b by a tenon 0 and a screw (Z. The lower part b has in it at the rear, or heel, part recesses e and is provided with hooks f and the said part b is also provided with a metal sole 9 which may be secured by screws.
The hollow portion h which corresponds to the vamp of the boot or shoe is, preferably of sheet metal and open at its rear, or heel, part and inside this part it is provided with eyes i capable of engaging with the hooks f on the part b of the solid portion of the last. To use this arrangement, the lower part b of the solid portion of the last is first engaged with the hollow portion h and the hooks f are engaged with the eyes i which enter recesses e in the part b and then the upper part a of the solid portion of the last, corresponding to the instep of the boot, or shoe, is placed on the lower part 7) and secured thereto by means of the tenon c and screw (Z.
In order to effect the mounting of the vamp, the operator proceeds in the usual manner, either by hand, or by machinery, to apply the vamp to the combined last and fixes it to the sole sheet by means of brads, or the like, and when the mounting has been done, the operator withdraws the solid portion of the last a7) by first removing the upper part a, and then he effects sewing or nailing, of the final sole on the hollow portion of the last.
What I claim is:-.
1. A last comprising a hollow metal portion open at top and bottom, and a solid portion arranged to engage the hollow portion so as to serve for the mounting of the vamp, the said solid portion being arranged for removal.
2. A last comprising a solid portion formed in two parts, an upper part and a vamp part, and means for attaching said parts together, and a hollow Vamp portion for surrounding the vamp part of the said solid portion, the upper part projecting slightly beyond the lower part of the solid portion and resting upon the edge of the hollow portion and forming a flush joint therewith, the said lower part being provided at the rear or heel end with recesses and hooks located therein and the hollow portion having eyes for mating with said hooks. i 8. In a last, the combination with a hollow metal vamp portion, being open at the top and bottom and the sides being separated at the heel, a fastening carried by each side at the heel and a two-part solid portion having a part for occupying the hollow portion and provided with fastening devices for engaging the fastening devices at the heel thereof, and a part adapted to engage the part within the hollow portion and to overlie the edges thereof.
In' witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
