Description

J. H. RYD
Patented Oct. 25, I898. ER & I. H. FISH.
LAST.
tion filed Jan. 3, 1898.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA H. RYDER AND ISAAC II. FISH, OF BROQKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 612,870, dated October 25, 1898.
Application filed January 3, 1898- Serial No. 665,386. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOSHUA H. RYDER and ISAAC I-I. FISH, citizens of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boot and shoe lasts, and has for its object the easy and ready withdrawal of the last from the boot or shoe when finished, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, showing the last expanded; and Fig. 3 represents a similar longitudinal section showing the heel part swung downward relative to the fore part of the last for the withdrawal of the last from the boot or shoe.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the fore part of a last, and B represents the heel part, which are separate from each other, being divided on the line C, as shown.
In practice We prefer to secure to the heel part B a metal plate D, which is pivoted at E to the fore part A, as shown. In divided lasts heretofore made the heel and fore parts have been hinged together at the junction of said parts, which is objectionable, as when swinging the heel part on its pivotal connection to the fore part it is not shortened during the early part of such swinging motion to readily release the last from the interior of the boot or shoe.
In our device, as will be seen by reference to the drawings, the pivotal connection between the heel part and fore part of the last is arranged at one side of the division-line C-that is, between the latter and the toe portion of the fore part Aby which arrangement the heel part B will be caused to instantly release itself from the interior heel portion of the boot or shoe the moment such heel part Bis swung on its pivotal connection relative to the fore part A. In practice we use in connection with said divided and pivoted last a locking device consisting of a latch F, hinged at b to the heel part B and having at its free end a hook f, adapted to interlock into a cavity or recess a on the rear portion of the fore part A, as shown in the drawings.
When the latch F is withdrawn from the fore part of the last, its hooked end f serves as a ready means for taking hold of by the operator in pulling the closed last out of the finished boot or shoe.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of our invention, we wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In a divided last a fore part and heel part pivoted together as described, combined with a locking-latch pivoted to one of the members and adapted to be interlocked with the other, and having a hooked end f, for withdrawing the last from the boot or shoe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSHUA n. RYDER. ISAAC H. FISH.
