R. JOHNSTON.
ENVELOP.
No. 588,679. Patented Aug. 24,1897.
WITNESSES /NVENTUB ATTORNEYJ- THE NORM! PETERS 00.. mm'uumo" WASHINGTON, o c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI ROIVAN JOHNSTON, OF CALGARY, CANADA.
ENVELO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,679, dated August 24, 1897.
Application filed January 26, 1897. Serial No. 620,718. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROWAN J 0HNSTON,acitizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Calgary, in the district of Alberta, Northwest Territories of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is so constructed that when the envelop has been sealed it cannot be opened without leaving evidence of the fact or without destroying the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a blank from which my improved envelop is made; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the blank partially folded, and Fig. 3 a back View of the envelop folded and sealed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the saine letters of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I cut from a sheet of paper of any desired color or quality the blank shown in Fig.' 1, said blank consisting of a body portion A, a folding side 13, a flap C, and folding end pieces D and G.
One end of the folding side B is projected in line with the end of the body portion A and is provided with an extension I), on which is formed atongue b and that side of the folding end D adjacent to the flap is projected in line with the body portion A and is provided with a semicircular notch or recess 01 and with an extension 01 The flap C is gummed on its under surface in the usual manner, as shown at C and the flap B, together with the extension I) and the tongue 6 are gummed on their inner surfaces, as shown at 72 and the extension d and the outer end of the folding end- D are gummed on their inner surfaces, as shown at d In preparing the envelop for use the folding end G is first folded over the back of the body portion, after which the folding end D is folded over and sealed to the end G, and
the extension d is folded around the end of the envelop, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and sealed thereto, and the side B is then folded over and sealed to end D, after which the flap C is folded over and sealed to said side and said end, and the extension I? is then sealed to the flap, and the tongue 6 is folded over the edge of the envelop and sealed thereto, as shown in Fig. 3 in dotted lines.
The folding end D is almost as long as the body portion of the envelop, and the folding end Gis much shorter, and when constructed and sealed in the manner described it will be apparent that the envelop cannot be unsealed without tearing off the tongue 19 of the extension I), also without tearing off said extension, and this is also true of the extension 61 of the folding end D, and the tearing off of these parts will be proof of the fact that the envelop has been sealed and opened.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and does not add materially to the cost of the envelop.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An envelop composed of a blank, said blank consisting of a body portion, and two folding ends as D, and G, the folding end D, being provided with an extension (1 and the upper side thereof being in the same line with the body portion of the envelop, and said body portion being provided with a folding side and a folding, flap, one end of said folding side being projected in line with the end of the body portion of the envelop, and
being provided with an extension on which is formed a tongue, said end portion, said flap and said folding side being gummed on their inner surfaces, substantially as shown and described.
2. An envelop composed of a blank, said blank consisting of a body portion, and two folding ends as D, and G, the folding end D, being provided with an extension CV, and the upper side thereof, being in the same line with the body portion of the envelop, and said body portion being provided with a folding side and a folding flap, one end of said folding side being projected in line with the end of the body portion of the envelop, and
being provided with an extension which is my invention I have signed my name, in presformed on the tongue, said end portion, said enoeof the subscribing witnesses, this 16th flap and said folding side being gummed on day of January, 1897.
their inner surfaces, and the folding end D, ROWVAN JOHNSTON. 5 being longer than the folding end G, sub- W'itnesses:
stantially as shown and described. ARTHUR FREDERICK Momronn BROOKE,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as HENRY HAMILTON MCCULLOCII.
