To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TOM J. SALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Returnable Envelop, of which the following is a specification in such -full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.

The object of this invention is to make a return envelop for the use of railways, eX- press companies and the Post Oflice Department or -other large businesses where it is desired to send out certain matter and have a reply to the letter sent out returned at once with the desired in formation.

Another object oi the invention is to make an envelop that will save the cost of one envelop and be of the same service as two where it is possible to use the envelop for the return of matter that has been sent out in it, as in the cases mentioned above.

Another object oi' the invention is to provide means for sealing the envelop with the smallest possible amount of the adhesive, said adhesive being placed on the envelo in only three places, and those places are a on the same side of the envelop blank as the same is cut'from the sheet thus making it very easy to gum.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.

In the drawings in which the same numeral is applied to the same parts throughout, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cut blank, Fig. 2 is a side elevation oi` the blank folded into an envelop, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view oi the envelop looking :from one end.

The envelop is formed with the body portion 1, the bottom flap 2, the end flap 3, and the securing flap 4 all the latter of which are secured to the body 1. In addition the flap 3 has a sealing flap 6 and two securing tabs 8 and 9, and the flap 2 has a securing flap 5 on one end. The envelop is then folded with the iiap 3 between the body portion 1 and the bottom flap 2, the tabs 8 and 9 projecting through the slots in the bottoml of the envelop. The two compartments formed in this way are then sealed at the ends by means ofthe securing aps 4 and 5, the latter l being gummed to the body 1 and the former to the bottom flap 2.

It will be noted that the result of the above construction is to form an envelop having two pockets with only the material necessary for one and one-half ordinary envelope. The envelop may be sealed with no more gum than the common envelops, since there are only three gummed places. The envelo i is mailed in the first place, when the sealing flaps 4 and 5 have been secured, by placing the letter in the compartment formed by the bottom flap 2 and the end flap 3, the sealing flap 6 being turned down so that its gummed side is out, the tabs 8 and 9 heilig used to seal the letter. The letter having reached its first destination the tabs are torn oil and the letter is placed in the compartment formed by the body 1 and the end lap 3, the sealing being accomplished this time by the use of the remaining gum on the flap 6, which is attached to the body portion 1, since when the letter was sent out in the iirst place only the small amount of gum at 12 was used.

Since money is usually sent only the envelop may be used for that purpose when the tabs 8 and 9 are secured to the sealingI flap 6, but should it be desired to make the envelop secure on both trips a little mucilage may be placed on the bottom of the Ha 3 to prevent its removal from the envelbp, but in any event it is almost sure that the envelop will be torn should it be tampered with.

Having thus described my invention in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same what I claim as new and desire to secure by lLetters Patent ol' the United. States is as iolows:

1.
