Description
FFICEL J. W. SI-IANKLAND, OF SUMMERFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES W. SHANK- LAND, of Summerfield, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the nature, construction, and operation ofthe same, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention-stone, and E E two iron blocks, which intervene between the lower end ofthe post and the stone I), to afford ventilation and prevent the gathering of water against the lower surfaces ot' the post, which would quickly rot it.
To the sides ot' the post are attached blocks F, and upon these latter rest the arms G G,
which are held by the side blocks, H H, on the keys I, the blocks forming offsets to bind down on the arms. Thekeys I have caps J to keep dry their upper ends and the junction ot' the blocks H therewith.
The lower board may be of the same width and occupy the same vertical position as the blocks F, in which case one of the arms G will rest upon it and assist in maintaining the panel in position.
An end piece, K, completes the finish of this portion, and assists in binding the portions together. L is the cap on the post. .a
Having thus described my invention, what I ela-im therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement ofthe post A, iron blocks E E, and foundation-stone I), as described.
2. The mode of securing the arms and post in position by the combination of bloclts H, the keys l', arms G, and the blocks F on the post A, substantially as described and represented.
J. W. SHANKLAND.
