Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ALFRED V. BYDEB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED TRUNK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,1211, dated September `18, 1866.`
To all whom it may concern:
Be -it known that I, ALFRED V. RTDER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trunk; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my invention in an open state; Fig. 2, a side view ofthe same in an open state; Fig. 3, a side view ot' the same in a closed state.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved trunk of that class which is provided with drawers 5 and it consists in constructing the trunk in such a manner that the drawer p0rtion is rendered very accessible, and when the trunkis open the drawer portion does not interfere with the other portion of the trunk.
My invention, it is believed, is superior to other trunks provided with drawers, in consequence Ot' all the portions of the trunk being accessible when the trunk is open, all the drawers being exposed, so that they may be drawn out and the lid of the other portion raised without the necessity of removing or detachin g any parts.
I construct the trunk of quadrilateral form, and of any suitable or desired dimensions, and of wood covered with leather, similar to the ordinary trunks in use.
The hinged portion A of the trunk may be described as a section formed of a central vertical cut, a, and a horizontal cut, b, the latter being a triiie above the center of the height of the trunk. This portion A of the truuk-is hinged to the part B of the other portion at the top of the cut a, as shown at c, so that A may be turned over upon the top of B, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The portion A contains drawers C, and the part on which A rests when turned up is also provided with a drawer, G', and the top ofthe lower part, D, of the trunk provided with a lid or cover.
From the above description it will be seen that when the trunk is open all parts of the saine arevaccessible, no portions requiring to be withdrawn, as is the case when trays are used.
To each end of the trunk there is attached a metal plate, E, and these plates extend across the angles formed by the cuts a b, and serve as stays to the part or portion A when the same is turned down or closed. The handles F are attached to these plates E.
rIhis trunk may be constructed about as cheap as the ordinary superior cr first-class trunks in present use. It may be manufactured equally as strong, and may be opened and closed with the same facility as the ordinary trunks. i
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat entl. A trunk provided with -a hinged portion, A, formed by the vertical and horizontal cuts a b in the main portion, andrhinged to the part B, so that it may, when turned up 0r opened, rest upon B, the parts A B being provided with drawers, and the other parts, D, provided with a lid or cover, substantially asl shown and described. 2. In combination with the hinged portion A, the metal stays or plate E, applied to the ends of the trunk, and having the handles F attached, substantially as set forth.
The above specification of my invention, signed by me this 6th day of June, 1866.
