Be it known that I, SATORU MATO, a subject of the -Emperor of Japan, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in J ewelry-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', which form a part of this specification. v

The object of my invention is to provide a box in which will be concealed a jewel-,tray or other holding device. Primarily I form the exterior of the box inthe form of a book. In the hollow interior of the box is placed the tray or receptacle. Access to the interior is obtained by forming the book so that it will slide and also forming one of .the edges of the long portion of the book so that it will slide, the slide forming the back locking the sliding-leaf portion. 'By sliding first the back slide and then the leaf-slide access is obtained to the interior ofA the box and the drawer or other receptacle may be removed.

I will now describe the embodiment -of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved box closed. 'The box proper shown is formed of the top A, bottom B, back C, front D, and `ends E E'. The box is formed of wood, which may be covered on the top, bottom, and back with leather, silk, or plush. The back C is formed of two parts c and c', the part o having the projectingilanges c2 entering grooves c3 in the top A and bottom B, and in which grooves said back o slides.' The endsE E', as Well as the front D, are preferably formed or decorated to give the appearance of leaves of a book. The end E has upper and lower projecting flanges e, which enter corresponding grooves e in the topAand bottom B. Whenv the movable back c is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the closed position of the box overlies the end E and prevents it from being moved. A projection e3 from the front D and a mitered edge on that end of end E prevent the end E being slid in that direction. Within the box, which is hollow, is the tray F, having divisions for the reception of articles of jew= elry or other articles of value which are de# sired to be concealed, and G is its cover.

In order to open the box, the back portion C is slid a distance sufcient to release the end E, which is then slid toward the back until it is free from the box,when through the orifice thus formed the tray F may readily be re= moved. To close the box, the reverse operation is carried out. By this construction a box is formed having the outward appearance of a book and having a novel and secret construction, whereby articles placed within the box may be safely kept.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is

1. A box of the shape and conguration of a book,having a two-part back, the outer part of said back and one end portion of the box being slidably secured to the remainder of the box.

2. A box of the shape and configuration of a book, having a two-part back, the outer part of said back being slidably connected to the remainder of the box, said box having an end slidable in the direction of the back and back overlying said end. y

3. A box of the shape and configuration of a book having the grooved-top and bottom aty the back thereof, a two-part back the outer part of said back. having flangedl portionsA slidable in said grooves, there being grooves at the top and bottom of one end of said box, an end piece having flanges movable in and guided by said grooves.
