" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. BRACKETT, orNnwToNviLin, MASSACHUSETTS.
sox` FOR4 BOTTLES, CANDY-Boxes, eac.
VSPECIllICAJlION fox-:ning part of Letters Patent No. 718,081, dated January 13, 1903.
Appiicanon met october 7, 1901. l Senn No. 77.757. No man.)
To @ZZ whom z5-may concern? Be it known that-1, CHARLES ABRAQKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing atNewtonville, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful` Improvements in Boxesfor Bottles, Candy-Boxes, or other Articles, of which .thefollowing is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference lbeing had to theaccompanying drawings, 4forming a part of this specication.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved box or case in the shaper of a book to hold a pocket-flask or other bot-l tle or to hold another box having for its contents candy,1nuts, or similar articles and so arranged that the fiask, bottle, or second box can be partly withdrawn from the book-box and-its contents extractedand the bottle or box quickly returned to its former place, the
box to have all the appearance of a book, be-
ing coveredV withpaperor other material for this purpose, withoutany visible catch,sp`ring, or hingeto denote that'it has a lid. The concealed catch or fastening, which holds the lid in anormal position, is so arranged as to be releasedlwhen pressure is' applied uponaY certain part ofthe back between thetwo covers', which will be indicated-by a star, letter, or similar mark. Its novel construction, ar-` rangement, and combination of parts will be substantially as hereinafter described and claimed: t
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lshows a perspective view of my box as it will look when closed. Fig. 2 is afront side sectional view of the box, Showingy its arrangement to'hold a iiask. Fig. 3 is a section of the box from front side to back side and look` vInrthe drawings, A represents the boxgol the back side, ,and b the front side,.oflthe c is thev bindingside, and f the leaf" side. d is the top or lid side, and e the bottom, of box, ithe sides bt, b, `and c extending partly belowlth'e bottom ,of` the box, as is co n1- mon in books', and being the parts upon which` the `box would ordinarilyv rest. ."The leaf `side n, which may be insertedin thebox-cavity'm. V Having thus described my invention, what 9o of the top of box, as. shown in Fig. 2, but is cutaway, as at'fz, to forni a support forthe lid d, which `is attached -toit by the'hinge h, havingr the twoleaves r'and j, the socket por# tionsh, andthetorsionalsprings. The leaves 'i andy', as is apparent, are attached by the 1 screws or tacks e, respectively, to'the lid clv and the' side f. The torsional spring` s serves to force the lid open by having its endsr and.
if engaging the hinged leaves i and j, respec- 6o tively. c
Attached to theides a., b, and bn their' inner side, are the'strips a', b', and `g, -Which extend upward to the lid d and support thelid when closed, so that a downward pressure V -on thelid will not force the'lid in.
n Through the upper part of this piece g extends the pin fw, havingat its outer end thebutton w, which is Set within 'the side c so that it cannot be.
distinguished, but will be designatedib'y the '7o star or other mark on the side o. Thejpin has at its otherend the upward-extending vertical bar v, having the foot o', which when the lid is closed willV extend into the slot or aperture o and latch on the catch p, which extends across theY aperture, 'as is shown in Figs.- 2 and 3, and whichis securely fastened to the lid by the screwsor tacks q. The side piece gis suicientlyihollowed out at :t so that lthis button can be pushed inward to releaseho The bar orlatch o, if desired, A ldownward below the pinw and 'n its lower end attached, as at u). Attachdto the strip g is another strip 7a, which, extedi. ing upward to the lid d,"form's' additional sup-` 85` the catch p. may exten port for it and covers up thelatch fu, the side.
stripsa', ig', 70,(and1f being of sufficient thickness to make a tight casefor the` flask or box A Sask-box, in the Snape of Bemanning y v@inner and outerA walls, the outer-,wallsh'avingi an imitationbook-covering, a latch'andcatch 95 for locking the lid of boxwhenclosehthe latch being inserted between thfenn'erand f *d outer walls and operated-bye'. concealed but T extends to the top, as at f', and forms part 5c ton designated byastar or other markya hinge- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set A l composed of two leaves attached to the lidl my hand in' the presence ofjtwo subscribing land the box yproper and a torsional spring witnesses. 1 Whose' ends engage the said leaves for spring- CHARLES A.
