IMPROVED FOLDING LUNCH-BOX.

TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS .SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, FnANKLIN B. PARKS, of Cambridgeport, in the county ot' Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Folding Lunch-Box; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-V Figure 1 is a longitudinal and vertical section of the'box.
Figure 2, a transverse section, and
Figure 3, a horizontalpsection of it.
Figure 4 is an edge view of it as it appears when in a folded state. Y
The box is composed of top and bottom plates, two side and two end plates, and certain hooks hinged to the top plate.
A Arepresents the bottom and B the top plate of the box, each having a lip or ange, a, raised on each of its sides and-ends in manner as represented. The side plates are exhibited at C C, each being so connected to the bottom plate by means of hinges b as to be capable of being turned down fiatwise thereupon, from a position at right angles therewith and against a side flange of such plate. Each of the end plates D D is also hinged to one end of one of the side plates, as shown at c, so as to be capable of being turned froma position atwise against the side plate into one at right angles with it, the other side plate being formed or provided with a recess, d, to receive the free end of the end plate. The top plate, when in place, closes upon the side and end plates, and is furnished 'with two hooks E E, which' are hinged to its opposite ends, and formed as represented. Each end plate D has a hole, d', made through it for reception of one of the hooks. From the above it will be seen that the side plates when at rightangles'to the bottom plate abut against its ilanges; also that the end plates when at right angles with the side platos enter the recess thereof. and abut against the end flanges of the bottom plate. When the eov'er is on the upper edges of the side and'en'd plates, and they are at right angles with the bottom plate, and the hooks are hooked into the holes of the end plates,'the flanges of the cover will aid in holding the side and end plates in their positions. By removing the'cover from the rest of the box, and turning each end plate back against its side plate, and both-side plates down atwise upon the bottom-plate, (it being understood that the bottom plate is at least twice the width of each of the side plates,) the cover may be put on the end and side plates so folded down, and maybe vlocked upon the bottom plate by means of the hooks, the whole then being reduced to the small compass, as represented in edge view in iig. 4. The box then will be in a much better condition for being packed in a valise or trunk, or for being transported from one place to another, than it would be when in a state for holding edibles or other articles.
I do not claim a folding lunch-box as made with its bottom., sides, and ends connected in manner and so as to be capable of being folded together, such being represented in the patent of J. F. Morgan, dated May 2, 1865.
I'claim`as an improvement, the arrangement of the flanges of the box bottom, sides, and ends with such bottom, sides, and ends connected in manner and so as to be capable of being folded together, as explained, each end plate under such an arrangement being hinged to one of the side plates.
I also claim the arrangement of the flanges of the box top with the said top, and with the bottom, sides, andends connectedtogether, in manner and so as to be capable of being folded together as described.
I also claim the arrangement of the hooks and their receiving holes with the top, t-he bottom, sidesand ends of the box, connected in manner and so as to be capable of being folded together, as set forth.
I also claim the combination of the recesses of. the sides with the bottom, sides, and ends, connected substantiallyi'n manner and so as to be -capable of being folded together as explained.
l FRANKLIN B. PARKS.
