Be it known that I, OCRA G. MANN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Commode, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to construct a commode adapted for attachment directly to a bed of any description and to provide a means whereby the sea-t of the commode may be adjusted vertically, as occasion may demand, and, furthermore, to provide a means whereby the back of the commode may be placed at an angle to the side board of the bed or parallel with the same, the commode being so connected with the bed as to admit of the patient passing' from the bed to the commode without exposure.

Another object of the invention is to provide a means that will be simple and durable, whereby the vessel may be expeditiously and conveniently secured to the seat of the commode and looked in position thereon.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is 'to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the improved cornmode, and Fig. 3 is a partial vertical sectional. view of the seat and an edge view of the back applied to the seat.

In carrying out the invention the seat A of the commode is provided with the usual opening 10, which may be given any desired shape, but is preferably of somewhat circula-r contour. The seat A is supported by two or more, preferably three, legs B. The aforesaid legs are of telescopic character and preferably consist of an upper tubular section 11 and a lower rod-section 12, having vertical movement in the tubular section, the tubular section of each leg being provided with a set-screwl or the equivalent thereof, which after the rod section is adjusted in the body or tubular section of the leg will hold the said parts in their adjusted position by being properly manipulated. It will be understood that any equivalent of the set-screw 13 may be employed to hold the two sections of the legs in predetermined position.

The lower or rod section of each leg is preferably provided with a foot 15, of rubber or other material calculated to cling to the floor and yet prevent any undue noise when the commode .is adjusted to the bed or when it is removed therefrom.

The body-section l1 of each leg is connected with the bottom of the seat A by means of a hinge 14:, so that when the commode is not in use the legs may be folded up in a compact manner beneath the seat, and these hinges are attached to the inner faces of the aforesaid legs, as is best shown in Fig. 1.

Around the opening 10 in the seat A a clamp C is arranged, and this clamp is preferably made of wire of a spring character, which is bent upon itself to form hooks 1G, and these hooks surround the opening 10 at the bottom for a predetermined distance, the wire being attached by staples or other means to the bottom of the seat, and the said clamp is provided with a spring-latch 16, which serves to connect its end members, as is best shown in Fig. 2, the latch 16rh having pivotal or hinged connection with one end of the clamp and locking engagement with the other end. The lhook members of the clamp are adapted to receive the ilange of the vessel D, which is to be placed below the opening 10, as shown particularly in Fig. l. Therefore the clamp may be termed a hanger for the' aforesaid vessel. After the vessel has been adjusted in the clamp or hanger the latch 16a is closed, being brought to the position shown in Fig. 2, and effectually prevents the vessel from being displaced. At one end of the seat A locking-arms 1'? are located, the said arms being connected with the seat by means of hinges 1S or their equivalents, so that when these arms are not in use they maybe folded up beneath the said seat, together with the legs ll.

Itis evident that under this construction Y the patient may move or may be moved from ythe bed to the commodewithoutexposure, and when the commode is no longerk required the patient may be moved back to the bed under the same favorable conditions and the vessel detached from the commode, and after such detachment the back may be separated from the seat and thelegs 'and `locking-arms f of the commode Vmay be folded up beneath the seat, so that the Whole may occupy buta minimum of space.

- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent*u Inacommode, the combination, with a seat, of telescopic supports connected With the seat, a clamp or hanger attached to the seat, and having hook members adapted to receive the iiange of a vessel, and a locking device connected with the said clamp or hanger, as and for the purpose specied.

In a commode, a seat, telescopic supports having a hinged connection With the seat, and a clamp or hanger consisting of a series of connected substantially horizontallylocated hooks placed around the opening in the seat, and arranged to receive the fiange of the vessel and a spring-latch connecting the ends of said clamp or hanger, as and for the purpose specified.
