Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 7, 1912. Serial No. 702,213.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn: A. PACZYN- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Foot stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a foot-stool and attachment for actuating the pedals of pianos, the same being designed for use by children and other persons who are unable to reach the pedals.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device of the kind stated which is strong, durable and without complicated parts, and which can be readily adjusted to suit the reach of the player, and with these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring specifically to the drawing, 10 denotes the frame of the stool or bench, the same being provided with a seat portion 11 which may be a rubber covered board. This rubber fits inside the frame and is held in place therein by a tongue 12 secured at 13 to a lug 14; on the inner edge of the frame, said tongue being located so as to extend beneath the seat board. A sufiicient number of these supporting devices for the seat board is provided so that the latter will be securely held within the frame.
The legs of the frame 10 are indicated at 15, there being one at each corner. Each leg comprises a post which extends loosely through a vertical opening in the frame. The posts rise from the seat frame and at the respective ends thereof they are connected at the top by a cross-bar 16 rigidly secured to said posts in any suitable manner. At each end of the frame, midway between the front and rear thereof, is also located a post 17 which passes loosely through a vertical opening in the frame and is connected at the top to the cross-bar 16. The frame is vertically adjustable on the posts 15 and 17 in order that it may be raised and lowered with respect to the floor to suit the person using the stool or bench.
In order to lock the frame in adjusted position, each post 17 is provided with a latch comprising a rod 18 passing transversely through. the frame and having atits inner end a hook-shaped bend 19 which extends back into an aperture in the frame, said aperture communicating with the opening in which the post seats, and said post has a vertical series of apertures 20 into a selected one of which the extremity of the bend 19 is adapted to be inserted to lock the frame. The outer end of the rod 18 has a head 21, between which latter and the frame is interposed a spring 22 which tends to force the rod outward and thus hold its bend seated in the aperture of the post. Upon pushing the rod inward, the bend is retracted from the aperture in the post, thus releasing the frame and enabling it to be adjusted for the purpose hereinbefore described. The posts 15 and 17 are provided with suitable foot portions 23.
The structure herein described is designed primarily for a foot-stool or rest, but it may also be used as a bench.
Associated with the foot-stool is a device for actuating the pedals 24 of a piano, said device comprising the following parts: In the front portion of the frame 10 is a longitudinal slot 25 through which passes a bolt 26 which fastens to said portion of the frame a forwardly extending bracket arm 27. The purpose of the slot is to permit the adjustment of the bracket arm toward either end of the stool frame. To the outer end of the bracket arm is pivoted, as indicated at 28, a pedal 29 having intermediate its ends an elongated vertical opening 30 through which loosely passes a depending stem 31 having its lower end fitted with a foot-piece 32 which is adapted to rest on the piano pedal 2a. The stem 31 also passes through an aperture in the bracket arm 27 and is held against rotary movement by having a longitudinal fin 33, the aperture in the bracketarm being shaped to receive the fin. The stem is adjustable vertically and is held in adjusted position by being locked to the pedal 29 by means of a latch 34 similar to the latch 18 already described, said rod having a vertical series of keeper apertures 35 for the latch. The outer end of the latch rod 34: has a tubular head 36 which fits slidably over a tubular housing 37 extending from the pedal, said housing inclosing the latch spring 38. The front portion of the frame 10 also carries two outstanding arms 39 having their outer ends fitted With rubber or cloth covered buffers 40, which latter are adapted to abut against the front frame of the piano and hold the stool spaced therefrom. The arms 39 seatslidably in openings in the front of the frame 10 and are adjustable so as to extend various distances therefrom according to the distance the stool is to be held spaced from the piano. Thumb screws ail are provided for locking the buffer arms in adjusted position.
In operation, the frame 10 is adjusted to such a height that it is within easy reach of the feet of the player. As the secondary pedal 29 is carried by the frame 10, it partakes of the adjustment thereof. If the foot piece 32 does not reach the pedal 24 of the piano, after the stool has been adjusted, the
By the structure herein described, a child or other person not able to reach the piano pedal 24 is enabled to actuate the same through the secondary pedal 29, and a foot rest is also provided, said secondary pedal and foot rest being readily adjustable to suit the reach of the player. The stool can also be used as a bench by raising the frame slotted side of the footrest and havinga vertical opening, fastening means passing through the bracket arm into the slot, a pedal pivoted to the outer end of the bracket arm and extending rearward to a'position above the foot-rest, said pedal having an opening, a vertically adjustable stem passing loosely through the pedal opening and through the opening in the bracket arms, said stem having means cooperating with the last-mentioned opening whereby the stem 1 is held against rotation, and means carried for locking the latter in vertically adjusted position.
