UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOIIN. H. GIBSON, OF LAWRENCE, TENNESSEE.
. MANUFACTURE OF BROOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,136, dated September 22, 1896.
Application iled May 27, 1896. Serial No. 593,333. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN l-I. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of McNairy and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Brooms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clearfand exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to the manufacture of brooms for household, general form, and stable use, and the object is to provide a simple device of this class that will practically last a lifetime, and by the use of which any person of ordinary intelligence can make a broom in a few moments, and which, when worn out, can readily be replaced; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate like parts of the y invention.
Figure l is a perspective of my improved broom. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the handle. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the D D are in line with those on the cross-braces,
and when the broom-straw forming the broom or brush O is in place, as shown, the bolts e' are tightened and the straw rigidly clamped in place between the clamps D D and the braces E E.
The formation of the spring-tongs d d and the slotted holes cl d in the ends of the crossbraces E E permits a certain degree .of latitude of adjustment or lateral compression in forming a durable and rigid broom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters lPatent of the United States, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a broom consisting of the handle A having the slot a', the clamp B having the bolt b', the broom-clamps D D' having the spring-tongs d, the bolts e', the cross-braces E E and broombrush C, constructed substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN II. GIBSON. W'itnesses:
T. H. GoocH, R. H. L. GEANTHAM.
