SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,319, dated September 27, 1898,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES LEE HUDGE- PETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paragould, in the county of Greene and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads; and I do declare the-following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in broom-heads, and especially to a peculiar arrangement of the head, which is made of two pieces of wire forming the clamping-jaws for holding the straw and being held together by means of thumb-screws, whereby the head may be adjusted and the straw replaced when worn out, the wire clamps being designed to hold various thicknesses of straw.

A further part of the invention resides in the provision of two brace-wires on each side of the head held together near their longitudinal center by means of a ring.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the ac companying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my head, Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the head; Fig. 3, a detail view of one side of the head, showing the manner of attachment of a cross-piece.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the ferrule, which is fastened to the handle of the broom and covers the ends of the wires of the head. The head embodying my invention consists of two sections, each composed of a single piece of wire B, which has an end secured to the handle beneath the said ferrule, thence passes downward, is outwardly curved,

twisted about a bolt 0, and is continued and twisted about a similar bolt at D. The wire is then turned at a right angle to its downward direction and has an offset at E, midway its length, across the width of the broom. At F is a bolt about which the wire is twisted and continued upward, twisted about the threaded bolt G, and its end secured to the handle at H. A cross-piece J, having loops at each end, engages over the bolts 0 and G on opposite sides of the wire frame described. A wire K has its middle portion secured within the ferrule to the handle of the broom and its ends extending down. One is secured to the bolt D and the other to a bolt F after passing through the ring N about the cross-wire J. The ends of the said wire K are secured to the bolts described, so that when they are turned after tightening the clamps to hold the brush or straw the wire K will tighten, as will be readily understood. The framework of wire which I have described comprises one-half of the head and the two together constitute the complete head which clamps the straw between the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture a broom head, consisting of two clampingframes, each made of wire and held to the broom-handle, each'wire of the frame B bent about four tightening-bolts as described, combined with a Wire K, having its middle portion secured within a ferrule on the handle of the broom, its ends carried about the bolts D and F, and a ring N contracting the wire K and held about a cross-piece J,'substantially as shown and described.
