GOPYISTS LINE MARKER.
No. 566,864. Patented Sept. 1, 1896 WITN ESSES V INV TOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LIBBIE HYDE MILLER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COPYISTS LINE-MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,864, dated. September 1, 1896.
Application filed June 22, 1896, $erial No. 596,381. (No model.)
$0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LIBBIE HYDE MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Copyists Line-Marker, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to devices for facilitating the work of those who are engaged in copying from books or manuscripts by providing a simple and effective device to indicate the line of the copy to which the writers attention should be turned, and one which, while in use, will be heavy enough to serve as a paper-weight or to keep the book from which the copyist is transcribing open at the page desired, I attain these objects by the contrivance illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the linemarker when laid upon the page of the book or the pile of manuscript in a position ready for use, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the under side of the same device with a scale marked thereupon for use by artists or draftsmen.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the two figures.
The framework A is constructed in the form of a segment of a circle and is made of iron or other heavy material of suflicient Weight to serve as a paper-weight and to keep a book open in any desired position, and may be of any convenient size. Both faces of said framework A are fiat, with the exception of the shoulder B, which is formed at one end of the lower face, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In order to form said shoulder B, the metal at the end containing said shoulder is cast considerably thicker than in the rest of the frame, leaving a plane surface or edge at the inner side of said shoulder perpendicular to the plane of the lower surface of the framework extending from the outer edge of the chord and at a right angle therewith to the outer edge of the arc of the se merit,
hen the line-marker is placed in a position ready for use, as indicated in-Fig. l, the edge of the shoulder B rests against the edges of the leaves of the book or manuscript from which the copy is to he made and serves as a guide to keep the chord of the frame A parallel with the written or printed line on the page. The copyist may then slide the frame up or down on the page at will without the trouble of adjusting it to the line whenever the line-marker is moved. A scale showing degrees and inches may be marked on the under side of said frame A, as indicated in Fig. 2.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A line-marker consisting of a framework A of any desired weight or size, in the shape of a segment of a circle, fiat on both sides, with the exception of one end of the under side which is formed into the shoulder B,which is thicker than the rest of the framework, and has a plane surface or edge at the side farthest from the end of the framework, perpendicular to the plane of its lower surface and extending from the outer edge of the chord and at right angles therewith, to the outer edge of the arc of the segment.
2. Aline-marker consisting of a framework A of any desired weight and size, in the shape of a segment of a circle, fiat on both sides, with the exception of one end of the under side, which is formed into the shoulder B,which is thicker than the rest of the framework and has a plane surface or edge at the side farthest from the end of the framework, perpendicular to the plane of its lower surface, and
extending from the outer edge of the chord and at right angles therewith, to the outer edge of the arc of the segment; the under side of said framework A having marked thereupon a scale of degrees and inches.
